FaceID is contained within the phone’s Secure Enclave, just like TouchID. If you’re comfortable using TouchID, there’s no reason to avoid FaceID.

Or to put it another way, all of your security concerns over FaceID exist with TouchID as well, so if you’re avoiding FaceID you should also be avoiding TouchID.

Apple’s claim is that the scan stays on the phone and cannot be uploaded to Apple, correct? Is there a way for this to be demonstrably proven? Or is it based on trust?

Just keep walking forward. Follow the herd. :D

Thankfully it seems there are a few cautious folk left out there. We are few and far between.

One could argue your fingerprint is more important than your FaceID. FaceID is great on XS, as well. I'm getting fewer failures.

Bad people do bad things because they can. They sell you convencience, but you will pay a great price for it, eventually.

No way going back to use TouchID now, it seems so outdated. I am in disgust every time I have to use it on my iPad.

No scanning my face by Apple for sure, no linking my face to browsing data and on-line behavior.

That makes no sense. If they were doing that, they could have done it with your fingerprint as well. We're visual creatures. To us a face is more recognizable than a fingerprint. Computers don't work that way. They're just as happy with fingerprint data as they are photos (which isn't how it works by the way). If they wanted to link things together, your fingerprint data would be enough.

My belief is that Face ID is a constantly updating high resolution biometric scan of one’s face, which is uploaded to Apple and shared in real time with the NSA data centers, Google, China, and Interpol.

Unless it can be proven to be otherwise.

I do not want apple or anything to scan my face

What do think it will do?

If someone with the resources wants to do something bad to you, you will not know until it is too late. The information that just the government has on you is leaked to anyone who wants it. They are poor about keeping anything secret. Just you medical info from going to a doctor or hospital is all sold to the highest bidder.

If you use a cell phone, you have already given up any privacy you thought you had. There is little privacy unless you live off the grid.

I don’t think you understand how Face ID works. Face ID and all your confidential information is stored in the secure enclave of the iPhone, no one has access to this, not even Apple. Not sure where you’re coming up with your conjectured theories in this thread.

Why would someone this stupid buy a smart phone. My god I didn’t think people like this existed.

Haha good one!

He’s worried about Apple. But forgets the government already has all his info.

You really believe it?

Face ID on my XS feels incredibly convenient and works better than having to reach for a fingerprint scanner. I don’t know how it was on the X but on the XS it is very seamless. I only wish I could get rid of the swipe when unlocking the phone.

Touch ID is better for situations that matter more like being to unlock your phone when mounted in car without taking your eyes off the road. Also, Face ID isn't as trust worthy since it has way too many false positives that doesn't happen with Touch ID (search YouTube for "Face ID fail").

folks, I did not move to the X last year because of face id. I decided to upgrade this year, but to switch off face id and not use it.
I have some questions, though. How do you do authentication within apps? In case of touch id, it is simple, you put you finder and done. How I will need to do it if I will disable face id?

No scanning my face by Apple for sure, no linking my face to browsing data and on-line behavior.

I know this is how it should not work, but I have zero trust. You hear about constant leaks of personal data of millions of people?

So, let me get this straight. You believe that Apple/NSA/Illuminati/Lizard People are somehow invested in wanting to record and know the shape of your face to secretly upload it (because of?... reasons?), contrary to Apple’s public statement in their security white paper* but you somehow also believe that hitting the button to disable the feature would cause the same parties to not scan and record your face say, “Oh well then, this guy’s untouchable”?

Face ID data doesn’t leave your device, and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else

Or maybe keep your eyes on the road? My theory is, you should not be using your phone In the car when driving, at all.

Imagine being this paranoid...
I do not have social media either!
[doublepost=1537643240][/doublepost]Have one question. A very typical scenario for me. My phone is laying on a desk, 20-30 cm from me. I press my finger to unlock it and see if I have messages. I do not take it. How do you do it with face id?
[doublepost=1537643319][/doublepost]You take Apple’s word as the Gospel?

As long as you keep your eyes on the road unlocking the phone by feel is no different than, for example, operating power windows then voice control can be used for navigation, etc. once unlocked. On the other hand, Face ID is dangerous since you have to take your eyes off the road.

Did I say that? I don’t believe I did. What I said was that it’s laughably naive to think that if they are acting contrary to their public statement that they would comply with an off switch. They totally have your “O” face on file and will use this use to do, um, things. Unspeakable things.

And once you’ve kept your eyes on the road to unlock it, how do you keep your eyes on the road to actually look at whatever it is you were unlocking it for?

I could’ve used Face ID today. Got caught in rain so bad and couldn’t access my phone as fingers were not recognized. Wife was at an airport trying to make a decision and I couldn’t respond.

Personally I prefer Face ID as I forget it’s even there. Touch ID is awesome too. You’re really good either way. I don’t understand this Face ID hate

I’m not sure if this thread is serious or not. Face ID information is not shared with Apple and I find Face ID to be faster and more reliable in a lot of situations. I’d suggest trying it out before thinking it can work for you. It’s already better than Touch ID and is just getting started.
