2017 5K iMac: Can someone please help put my mind at ease here and tell me if this is the new norm?; When attempting a PRAM reset on the 2017 5K iMac running 10.13.6 the Apple logo never appears on the screen indicating to release the CMD-OPT-P-R keys. Instead the screen starts out totally black, then bright, then black, etc... Is this the new norm?

Thanks

My iMac is a 2015 5K running the latest 10.14, but the Apple logo does appear on mine. It is not a direct comparison, but I don't think that would be different?

Hmmmm I am so confused now. Just got off the phone with a senior advisor who swears the no Apple logo PRAM reset is the norm now. That the screen only goes from black to brightly lit to let you know the PRAM reset is done.

Even on the T2 models the Apple logo appears. I am not sure why it would on the 2015, but not the 2017 iMac

Well crud. I don't know if this is normal or not now. Don't know who else to ask either. Ugh. It's really rubbing my OCD.

You would think that someone else on MR had a 2017 5K iMac and would be willing to chime in. Is the video card different on the 2017 vs 2015?
I agree, you would think someone would be willing to chime in and do a PRAM reboot and check. Radeon Pro 580 8GB here...

Yeah definitely not what I am getting here. Plus the chime has been gone since 2016.

Yeah, with my 2015 I get the single chime, then the second and release and it goes to the black screen with Apple Logo. On the 2018 MBP no chime as you say, just a start to the black screen with the Apple logo, a little whoosh (sigh of relief?) as it shuts back down, boots back to the black screen with the Apple logo. Let go of the keys and it boots.

Right, black screen with white Apple logo is what I am used to seeing, but there is no Apple logo at all anymore. Just a black screen, then it gets a little brighter, then black again, then brighter and I release the keys and it boots up. I am really dying to know if this is the new normal. Cannot believe no one here with a 2017 5K iMac will chime in. C'mon peeps. I will by you dinner just to test it. LOL

Not the new normal on my '15 iMac or '18 MBP. Wish I had a like model to test with, but I don't :(

However, if you would like to buy me a '17 5K iMac, testing it would the least I could do hahaha :)
LOL I’ll get right on that! ;) Any 2017 5K iMac owners out there? Hello hello hello. Echo echo echo.

Very good question. Proper section? Check. On topic? Check. Valid Question? Check.

Dunno. Maybe because it is a question rather than a complaint? The companies always garner more attention.

Otherwise, man.. I knew Mac Desktop sales were lagging, but surely someone else has a 2017 iMac?

That is how my 2017 5K iMac behaves with a PRAM reset. It makes it more difficult without the chime for sure!

The instant the screen becomes visible, I press the wireless keyboard PRAM reset key combo, then when the screen goes dark, I release the keys for a normal boot ... or do it again for a double or triple PRAM reset which has been required to fix some problems in the past. No Apple logo until it actually starts booting the OS after the system tests are complete.

They do need to bring back the chime!

But does your display ever go to white? Mine does not. On my 2015 I see a black screen and get the Apple logo and chime. It then gets every so slightly lighter, before going black again, I get the second chime and then release the buttons to where I get the black screen with the Apple logo and it boots

No, it never goes white during the PRAM reset process ... just black and less-black. Only after I release the keys and it actually starts to boot does the screen brighten and the Apple logo appears. It is tricky to know just when to press-hold the keys on a wireless keyboard to catch the boot-key modes.
