Know what carrier you are going to have it on. If you have an iPhone iPad use the Apple store app since it will remember preference and enable quick one press purchases. Know what product you are buying. phone, storage, color, payment plan. etc
Thanks, @hovscorpion12! I was recently mugged and haven't a device to download the app. Am I doomed using the website? Do most folks that order at this ridiculous hour make it into the pearly Apple gates?
I am sorry that happened to you. Apple website is defiantly the first choice. the second is your carriers website (VZ, ATT..etc). The third is say BestBuy.

I've all my specs ready to go.
I've my credit card copied and ready for pasting.
I've my location pick up queued. (I'm in for the iPhone Upgrade Plan.)

If you're doing Apple's upgrade plan, then you're not buying a phone tonight. I believe you're only making a reservation.
Sucks that you can't use the app, that's the quickest from my experience. Sorry about your mugging! Just don't give up. It could take anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes for the website to come back up, so don't get discouraged.
And as obvious as this sounds, it's also a good tip lol. Set an alarm for a few minutes before.
They don't run a credit check until you get to the store for your appointment.

I actually did fall asleep for about an hour, but just woke backup. Just to be safe, I did set an alarm.
