Pre-order = 6 more days for Apple to announce any hardware changes (i.e. camera)?

Sorry if this has already been stated on this forum.

I'm one of the ones holding out hope for a front-facing camera. Now that Apple has announced a pre-order date of March 12th, I assume any changes to the hardware would have to be announced before then, right? I'm sure they couldn't take orders for a product and then materially change that product at a later date (even if it's arguably for the better).

So - just a few more days for any last-minute surprises I guess....

They could announce changes after the pre-order date, but it's not likely they will be adding a camera. When I bought my original MBP it was upgraded to the 1.83 from 1.66 after my order was placed. If there are any changes at this point it would be minor such as a faster processor or possibly more storage.

I hope they NEVER put a camera on it, out of principle.

And what principle would that be?

I hate it for those that really want one
But quite frankly, it makes no difference to me and most people

I wonder how many people that complain about the camera would actually use it? I remember thinking how OMGAWESOME it was that my EEE Netbook had a camera.... and then it got used exactly ZERO times.

-- How many times am I going to say -- HEY! Let's Videoconference!
-- How many times is the person on the other end going to say... hey cool I have that too and just happen to be ready to videoconference with you!

And realistically how many times are they instead going to say:

Just call me man... I don't feel like dragging out the ipad/netbook/desktop.

What you see, is what you get! No camera till next year. Apple won't update this till annually. They don't do it with the iPhone and that's the money maker. Heck they don't even do it with the iPods. Buy now, or hold out till next year.

I love how people just take the way they use technology and assume everyone else falls in the exact same category.

I have family overseas, and use Skype video chat multiple times a week. So a front-facing camera on all of my devices (iMac, Macbook, iPad, etc.) would make it that much easier to keep in touch.

It will not have a camera. If it did I am sure they would have demoed all the great things a camera can do on it. Even without the demo, that is a pretty major feature to just casually announce via a press release "oh btw it also can videoconference and take pictures/video, k thx bye."

I am not bummed out over the camera, and if that is the only big feature that the next revision adds, I will probably just keep the 1st gen iPad I hope to buy in the next month for another generation.

I have a camera on my iPhone for on the go pictures already. I do not videoconference either. I can do that from my iMac anyway if needed. I have only video conferenced a handful of times when I was overseas and wanted my family to see me back home. Even then 99% of the time we stuck to voice only.

I think the camera is one of those features that looks great and very compelling on paper, but in practice will hardly be used. Especially a front-facing camera which is even worse than a backside camera since it's only practical purpose is videoconferencing, where as a backside camera can at least effectively turn the iPad into a [lower quality than a standalone but still acceptable for some occasions] camcorder/digital camera. (Imagine if Apple ONLY adds either a backside camera OR front facing camera... the endless debates that will spark!)

And okay, I get that SOME users might want video conference everyday. No matter what feature you discuss on any device there will always be some small niche of users that relies on it even if the 95% of other users don't care about it or say they want it/demand it but hardly ever will end up using it. A camera on the iPad is one of those features.

The principle that spec-sheet buyers know more than they do.

Apple already makes plenty of devices with cameras that run flash. Buy one of those. The ipad ain't one of 'em.

I can hear the whining now

Can you imagine what would happen if there were last minute hardware changes in the 3GS model after the Wifi only model came out?
