Remember when people said putting a CPU in the Studio Display was unnecessary? 😀
We have CPUs in TVs for more than 20 years now. And in broadband modems, NAS boxes, tablets, watches, phones, cars, coffee makers, stoves, microwaves, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, and more.

But even with all this, nobody has been able to explain what a "smart monitor" really is or what it does.

Even for an (QD)OLED, 32" 4K monitor typically costs between $1K to $1300 and those are 240Hz. With $300 discount it should offset the cost to compete against the market, but still that it's a bit overpriced considering it's a 165Hz with irritating external power brick.

Gotta say the new M9 is very enticing, specs wise.

4K, 32”, 165Hz, QD-OLED with decent USB-hub and USB-C input. It’s everything that Apple displays should have been for years. Built in smart apps is a letdown though. Let a monitor be a monitor.

Oh and also have a built in power supply for a cleaner look.
5k 27" is a lot higher pixel density. (5k iirc is about 40% more pixels than 4k). You would definitely notice the difference, especially if you wanted to use 2x hidpi which would put you at 32" 1080 yuuuuck.

My 57" monitor is the same as 2 32" 4k screens next to each other; at native res text is kinda small to read. Doable but uncomfortable! I scale things up, which does work well enough most of the time, but proper hidpi screens are easier on the eyes.

Well if you’re into high ppi, this year some manufacturers are into 27” OLED at 4K which is around 160ppi. My personal setup is 32” 4K which is around 140ppi and I gotta say I’m happy with it.

No it’s not as high as 5K 27” Studio Display, but those OLEDs are typically 240Hz against Apple’s 60Hz. High refresh rate makes every motion smooth and responsive, not just for gaming but also animations, moving apps and desktop UI in general.

Yeaaaaa I'm well aware! The 57" is a 240hz screen. (so is the 25" I have next to it lol). Admittedly, finding anything that can drive 7680x2160@240Hz is HARD. My PC (with a Radeon 9070xt video card) can do it in Windows but not in Linux (and I hate using Windows). My Mac Studio can only drive it at 120Hz and that's with a usb-c to displayport cable - it can't do it via HDMI. :'(

240Hz is deliciously smooth! 120Hz is still pretty darn good though.

Still, delicious image quality is nice. Especially if you're not moving things around much.

Doesn't Samsung put all of their monitors on sale, you know, ALL THE TIME? It seems like I'm always seeing a sale of at least a few hundred dollars off. Wait a few weeks. Good chance you'll find a better deal.
Yes they do - it's a way to appeal to the "super cheap" customer. They give away anything and everything. Cash off, bundles etc.

I maybe disagree? Smart stuff aside these are great monitors, especially when they inevitably get put on sale.
Fair enough!

I’m not a big fan of smart tvs for similar reasons.

I just want plain old tvs and monitors without smart stuff. Although I’d be super happy if they had lightweight operating systems which just sat there and adjusted colour balance, audio etc and pretty much nothing else.

Let me choose if I want to make it smart ie by adding an Apple TV etc) - but especially with tvs, this seems hard to find nowadays

Sounds great to me!

Who doesn't like getting really good sale prices?

On a related note, Samsung makes good hardware and even good phones. I also like their camera with the optional ability / mode where we can include the selfie cam inside photos and videos, and I wish that feature would make it's way to iPhone/Pixel. But their phone software is lacking one big thing: multiple users. Samsung, please bring multiple users to your phones. It's built into android, so by including it, you'll have *less work* and *more fans*.

Just don't connect it to WiFi or reject the EULA, it'll revert to a dumb-mode fallback. That's how I've lobotomized every display in my house
Yeah thanks. I kinda resent paying for functionality that I have no intention of using yet that it’s almost impossible to fund a to at any rate without said functionality!

The worst smart tv I ever had was a Samsung one which kept on changing the channel to a paid bundled channel whenever you switched it back on. And splattered upsell ads over the smart part.

It was similar to my partner’s windows machine which keeps on inserting promotions into the start menu.

I mean it’s not enough that you trust them with your purchase. Now they insist that you’re a target for incremental upsells through the UX.

At least Apple doesn’t do this.

Oh… wait ….

Well if you hate smart OS in your TV, you can just ignore it and plug your Apple TV instead. Use your smart tv as input switcher and picture tuning. Do it once and forget it just as you did to your old school TV.

I own 3 TVs in my house. Two of them is plugged into Apple TV while one in the spare bedroom is using the built in smart apps because they only get turned on sparingly. So yeah, there are places where built in smart apps make sense. Hotel rooms, spare rooms, lobbies where you can just connect wifit to the tv, then start streaming at no additional cost.

Yeah that’s what I do ie just use the Apple TV after having these bad experiences with built in smart features.
