Since the X won’t be available SIM Free on day 1, I am forced to figure out how to order the X since my AT&T bill is paid by my company and I am not getting involved in them ordering me (for political reasons). I plan to order it as a Verizon phone, which will come unlocked and use my Mom’s last 4 digit of SS and Account PIN. (She is ok with this by the way). I plan to pay the device in full with Apple Pay through the Apple Store app.

The questions I have is:

1) Will she need to confirm anything else during the pre-order process assuming I will have her last 4 of SS# and Account PIN? I have went through the process with the iPhone 8 and it verified everything. I did everything but continue to buy the phone. I assume I will be good here.

2) Once the phone is delivered to me, will I be able to pop out the Verizon SIM and put in my AT&T SIM right away? Or does it need to activate under her account and then do I need to switch? I don’t want to obviously screw up my Mom’s current phone.

When I received my Verizon phone, I needed to activate the phone on my account first. It wasn’t as simple as swapping SIM cards like when we were in AT&T. After activating it, you can always put the SIM card back in your mom’s phone.

Thanks. So basically I have to activate it with the new SIM card and then give it to my mom so she can stick it in her iPhone 6 or have her call Verizon and have her reactivate her original SIM?

I would say give the sim to your mom. She can’t activate old sim. Otherwise have her go to Verizon to get a new sim.

When you receive the new phone take that sim out put yours in and activate, it’s going to show your moms phone # but continue with the activation, set up as new iPhone so it’s quicker to get to the home screen, once phone is at home screen go to settings and reset network settings...once the phone reboots an turns back on your number should be active on it....any issues just call Verizon at that point...it shouldn’t effect your mother’s line at all and she can just keep her sim in her iPhone 6

Thanks, but keep in mind that I am on AT&T, does that matter?

Why not pay full price through the Apple Store for an AT&T iPhone X and you will then receive it Unlocked.
If you click through the pricing on the Apple site you end put with the following statement.

I don’t know anyone well enough that has AT&T to ask for their last 4 digits of their SS and account PIN. If you click through the prompts for the 8, you need to confirm those details.

I'm guessing you're not on your mom's Verizon Wireless plan.

Nope. My line is with AT&T through my company. Had no issue buying an 8plus sim free, but that won’t be an option with the X in order day...

Hmm, I don't think a Verizon iPhone X will work with AT&T since Verizon is CDMA and AT&T is GSM.

The reverse would appear to be a problem if you wanted to buy an AT&T phone and use it on Verizon’s network.

The version that supports Verizon also supports all of the LTE bands:

Model A1865*
FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 66)
TD-LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41)
TD-SCDMA 1900 (F), 2000 (A)
CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900, 2100 MHz)
UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

Model A1901*
Model A1901 does not support CDMA networks, such as those used by Verizon and Sprint.

FDD-LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 66)

Verizon phones come global unlocked, not just the iPhones but all their phones.

Worked out great for one of my buddies, he was on Verizon and recently switched to T-Mo and just popped his new T-Mo SIM in his Verizon iPhone 7 Plus and was good to go for the most part. His store had to help with some settings but other than that, no issue.

Theres also the other option of just buying the T-mobile version of the phone from apple, at full price. Will come unlocked so you can pop in what ever SIM card you want, as long as its a GSM carrier SIM.

Thanks! I didn’t realize they don’t confirm account details with T-Mobile like they do with Verizon and AT&T. This might be a better option as it doesn’t take a chance of ruining my mom’s line.

We don't have to be coy about it... he wants the Verizon version because it's "better".

No biggie, but you'll have to activate it on Verizon first, then it's SIM free from there. Not sure what credentials of your moms account you'll need, but it sounds like you have enough.

I bet Verizon delivery dates will be the first to slip. Especially considering the no "SIM free" option, no T-Mobile LTE-A support for theirs, and AT&T users know the Verizon version is objectively better/faster.

Expect Verizon to make people's lives miserable. They're good at it! Be careful;)

Discussion about a phone version being better than another is best left for the hundreds of threads already present on these forums. The OP was asking for a simple solution to his dilemma , and even expressed his concerns with using his moms verizon account.

Thanks for this feedback. So as an AT&T customer, am I better off getting the Verizon version rather than the T-Mobile version?

Except he has a viable AT&T account to purchase through already....

Even if it's a "work line" that his company pays for, buying a full price AT&T X would work fine on another postpaid AT&T (non "work") line.

It's absolutely true that the people clamoring to buy the "best" version of the X is going to end up hurting the real Verizon customers chance of getting one on launch day. It's also why people are trying desperately to find ways to buy through Verizon without an account of their own.

Just watch...

The problem is I can't purchase an AT&T one as I don't have the company account details nor do I care to ask for them. I am ok buying the Tmobile one as long as it works perfectly fine on AT&T. I do understand the Verizon one is the most desirable since it supports all bands.

There may be a sim free model of the phone
