I never , ever protect my iPhones.
i truly believe the object must show its life as time goes by.
totally agains a piece of old hardware looking like factory-new.
my 2 cents.

I am the opposite. I prefer it when hardware looks factory new after many years of use. Most people are surprised that my original Macintosh is 38 years old, haha.

OCD is a condition that require proper treatment I see.
People care because otherwise resale value would tank, even though practically speaking, as long as the device works fully and no major dent/damage, it should be fine.
Now that you are talking about it, I kind of hope pre-scratch becomes the norm so people would put less emphasis on taking care of their iPhone more than themselves.
Yeah but why? Resale market value just so the next person can put the phone in a case?

Meaningless.

For a fee you could probably find someone to put your 14 Pro Max through a blender.

No more Pro Max and no more anxiety. For an extra fee the remaining parts can be forever encased in Lucite as an exciting ornament for your coffee table!

So we spend over a thousand on a new iPhone, only for it to be scratched on purchase before we use it?

Sorry, but what a silly idea!

Yes give me some patina! Approaching thirty I anyhow need to show more maturity and mental stability!

I see people wanting to keep their phones pristine and flawless so it commands a higher resale value, but just how much more are we actually talking about? (Compared to one that may have a few micro scratches from normal wear and tear.)

I've always traded in my phones through my carrier since they generally have the highest trade-in values, so don't have any first hand experience selling. All they mostly care about is that it still turns on and the screen isn't cracked. I think that is generally the case for most trade-in companies anyway...they give the same value for a pristine/flawless phone vs. one that has normal wear and tear.

If I were to buy a used phone from someone, I wouldn't expect it to be pristine and flawless either, nor would I spend extra for one that claims to be.

Higher resale value may be debatable. Will it be easier to sell if you price it accordingly? Yes. Trade-in may be an option for those who chose the smallest storage size but not others who chose a higher storage size.

I have to say, though: I have never ever used cases, I have never really been too careful with my phones. Every one has ended up scratched and cracked and more often than not outright smashed. But I have had my iPhone 13 Pro for nearly a year now, and there are no scratches on it. At all! I’m in disbelief actually.

But this one is infinitely more hardy than any I have owned before. (XR, X, 8 plus, 6 plus (dropped out of first floor window 3 weeks after purchase) 5s (also quite hardy) 4s, 3gs).

I’m 100% sure I will regret both writing this down and even acknowledging it - as surely now I have tempted fate.

I am not sure if the poster meant this as a joke, but why would you want a scratch right out of the box. Most people have to work hard to pay for these devices. Getting a scratch or any defect out of the box is not acceptable especially the $1000+ price tag. Phone don't scratch by themselves especially if they have a screen protector and a good case unless you do something to them. If you enjoy scratches on your iPhone, then please go ahead scratch it. But a lot of people desire flawless devices.

Many ppl obsess over protecting their Eye Phones from scratches and other cosmetic imperfections - so we case, case, case. I was thinking - what if Apple pre-scratched their new phones? If we got our new iDevices pre-scratched, that would sure remove a lot of user stress. For a small fee, you could get your new phone double factory scratched!

My 8 Plus went for over 4 years without getting a scratch. It was constantly cased, so much that I think I forgot what it actually looked like. I went to a high-school football game, and we had to go through metal detectors - and put phones/keys/change in a little container. This happened to be the day I decided to try caseless - and you can guess what happened. The stress was real. I cursed Apple for making me go through this experience by not pre-scratching.

Maybe I’ll start a business - a Smartphone Pre-Scratch business - and advertise it as a stress-reliever and anxiety miracle remover.
Imagine a burst stainless frame on the Pro. Like a DeLorean

No way I would want a phone scratched out of the box. I prefer to scratch them myself ovetime on my own. If it does come scratched out of the box it's definitely a return for me.

Could do it with cars pre-dinged too

My iPhone 13PM and 12PM came with large imperfections out of the box on the stainless steel frame edges. So much so that my nail would catch them. Definitely wasn’t a stress reliever , but a point of frustration for me followed by the anxiety of having to wait on a replacement.

Damn it i post it…

I had one mark after dropping it once.
Decided to make it ‚feel’ better. There was also that post on mr about the sponge-grinded iPhone that inspired me.

It has an super soft finish now and I like it a lot…

I’ll use it for a long time and if I’ll sell if once I can imagine that some individualists will be happy to take it.

This reminds me of a friend who would regularly buy trucks brand new every year or two. The first thing he would do after bringing it home, he’d grab a brick and throw it across the truck bed. It was his way or reminding himself that it’s a truck, not a trophy. Don’t worry if it gets scratched up as long as it does what you purchased it to do.
