Either they go away with the numbers, or they go back to 8S/8S Plus, but this time with a real redesign similar to the X. The X is a one-off special edition for the tenth anniversary, I would expect most of the features to carry over to the "regular" offerings next year. Maybe not the OLED screen if it's true that the one in the X is NOT PenTile.

Personally, I doubt Apple will do away with the numbers.

iPhone 7, 8, X, 11, 12, etc. will stay.

The numbering system is intended to drive home the fact that there's an annual iPhone refresh. It's Apple's bread and butter source of revenue and they want to emphasize to consumers "you're due for an upgrade again."

iPhone is unlike iPad or MacBook. Those products don't need or cannot be refreshed annually because they rely on third-party technologies or the sales volume doesn't support an annual refresh. In those cases, Apple doesn't want to remind you're buying an iPad launched a year ago.

my guess is the new ones are called iPhone 9 and iPhone Xs. The year after in 2019 all new phones will drop the home button and it will be called iPhone 11 with X and Xs to stay in the line up. Then by 2020 the SE2 with the last home button is replaced with a same size no home button bezel design.

Seems possible.

It could either be called IPhone 8S or 9. They may have ditched the S numbering now though.
