Great presentation. It was a little long for my liking. It was a treat to see Rita Moreno. Fantastic actress and I read the piece about the dress this morning.

I would be fine with a split category but would the academy be willing to break with tradition.
Perhaps. They've actually made quite a few changes to the categories over the years, in addition to adding more Best Picture nominees.

One year they had Best Documentary without distinguishing Feature from Short.

They had a Best Dance Direction category for a few years, separate from Best Direction.

In the 40s, 50s, and half of the 60s they had separate Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design and Best Set Decoration categories for color films and for black and white films.

And the Best Score and Best Song categories have had so many variations over the years that it makes your head spin:

Best Score
Best Original Score
Best Original Song
Best Original Song Score
Best Original Music Score
Best Original Dramatic Score
Best Original Musical or Comedy Score
Best Original Song Score or Adaptation Score
Best Original Score and Its Adaptation or Adaptation Score
Best Original Song Score and Its Adaptation or Adaptation Score

I realized this evening that there were some things we didn't see on last night's broadcast that had always been part of the ceremonies in the past: first, no speech from the President of the Academy.....don't even know who that is this year. Secondly, no appearance by reps from PwC assuring everyone that the ballots were accurately counted and that the information was safely, securely and accurately stored and as the evening progressed going to continue to be correctly provided to presenters and recipients..... Ahem! Heh, funny thing about that! Guess they figured that probably wouldn't go over too well THIS year! LOL! Lastly, we also did not see a presentation of the Jean Hersholt Award. Was that because no one was chosen to receive it, or because it has been discontinued or because it is now presented at another time in another place and not broadcast?

There was no Jean Hersholt award this year. Perhaps nobody was worthy.

not sure why they include these unnecessary bits of going to a movie theater next door and feeding "the commoners" if they keep harping that they're pressed for time.

anyway as for the actual awards i thought it went pretty well. glad to see BR2049 getting the recognition it deserves especially roger deakins. thought shape of water was severely overrated but it wasn't a bad movie per se.

shape of water winning for production design was a head scratcher too.
