preference sync client problem

Getting the message: Preference Sync Client unexpectedly quit. Screen goes black and it takes 30 - 45 secs for it to come back on. Seems to eat up all my ram. iMac is running very slow. It was suggested that I turn off the MobileMe syncing. That has helped some but the computer is still running slow.
