This will be my first iPhone preorder directly from Apple and I've seen a lot of recommendations to use the Apple Store app for preordering. I plan on using my Barclaycard as the payment method and have already stored it in the app. Does anyone know if the app also requires users to input carrier information at the time of purchase (like the website does), or is there a way to bypass it? Since every second counts during preorders, I'd like to expedite the checkout process as much as possible.

Yes, your carrier information will be required. Even when buying unlocked in the past you still had to be select the carrier you were with first. I have generally pre-ordered from the website and had regular success. Either way, good luck next month :)

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to fire up my iPhone, iPad and desktop all at the same time!

For the 7, I was able to pre-configure my device via the app after the keynote. Selected size, storage, color, and carrier, then kept it as a favorite. Once preorders went live, all I had to do was select it from my favorites, hit the preorder button, TouchID for Apple Pay, and was done. Took less than 60 seconds.

Of course I was buying an unlocked T-Mo model at full price. Not sure how things change otherwise.

Interesting and noted. I’ve been with AT&T since 2011. I just switched to T-Mobile this year. Hopefully it’ll be easier for me too.

Perfect. I was hoping that I'd be able to preconfigure everything.

It wasn't by far the smoothest preorder experience I've ever had for an Apple product. I can only assume they'll do the same this year, though I can't see why they wouldn't!

Sometimes it's dependent on the changes made by the carrier or the users account details which can be problematic when preordering on the mobile application. I know some users were having difficulty preordering last year when the iPhone 7 launched with carrier restrictions.

Ahh yeah, I remember trying to preorder my 6 when I had Sprint. Not fun. I pay full price now specifically so I won't have to deal with my carrier until after I have the phone.

This is exactly why I am not buying it through the carrier. I'm on AT&T and, although I don't plan on leaving them, I don't want to be locked in to them via the Next program. Also, I presume it'll be a lot easier to get the phone unlocked, since the carrier will not be involved in the transaction.

I'm hoping Apple will announce some sort of new arrangement for Upgrade Program customers to reserve devices. Last year was an absolute shambles with Upgrade Program customers waiting weeks after launch just to reserve a device, because no stock had been put aside for them. They should get priority over in-store stock this year, and a clearer way of reserving. I seem to remember last year that all stock was gone by the time the correct web page was found for Upgrade Program customers to reserve.

In fact, the best way of doing it would be to allow said customers to choose model, colour, capacity and favourite Apple Store in advance and then for Apple to automatically make device reservations for them at launch.

Never thought to save an item in favourites. Probably hindered my chances last year getting the 7+ on time. So thanks for that!

Depending on where you live, in U.S, you will need to enter your carrier information to proceed, then you can buy it outright if you wish. However, sim-free models don't even ask but they are not usually available right at launch.

In Canada we can buy the phone outright without carrier info. Just put the phone in the cart, add AppleCare+ and use Pay to check out. Phone comes unlocked and can pop the SIM card when it comes with carrier of choice.

Is there a limit to how many phones you can order at once? I was going to get for the wife and daughter too.

What carrier information do they want? We're on Verizon.

I did a test run of what they ask on my iPad, they ask for wireless number, zip code, last 4 of account holder social and billing password. Do you have an edge agreement?

I set up the app with all the required info and am now waiting for the keynote to save the iPhone 8 landing page in my favorites. The only decision left to make is whether I'll opt for a 64GB or a 256GB!

Thanks. I'm on the AUP and wife owns outright. Daughter doesn't have a line yet. I guess that could prove to be a problem.
