There have been many rumors lately about a potential verizon iPhone coming in 2010.

I was talking to a couple Verizon techs in my area, and they told me a Verizon iPhone has been in the works for almost a year now but has just recently started to gain more attention. He suggested that I get "locked in" to a rate plan now, that way I wouldn't be affected if prices are upped when/if the iPhone comes out (and I might even be eligible for an upgrade.)

I've been wanting to switch to verizon for a while now, because of T-Mobile's spotty coverage and AT&T's outrageous rates and dropped calls. Verizon is by far the most well-rounded carrier in my area with decent rates & good coverage. I live near Baltimore, MD.

Seeing as I have been wanting to switch to verizon for a while, would now be a good time? And, (hypothetically) would I be better off if a verizon iPhone comes out (not having rates upped, & possibly being eligible for an upgrade)?

Exactly how would someone 'prepare' for a Verizon iPhone?

If you really think the rumor is true this time, then common sense says don't sign any new long term contract with your current provider, or Verizon before they offer the iPhone.

All I'm saying is that I'm GOING to switch to verizon sometime in the future. I'm just wondering (if the rumors prove true), would it be more beneficial to switch NOW rather then later if I intended to get the iPhone?

    I'm purely just speculating

If you switch now, odds are Verizon will ask you to sign a long term contract with one of their current phones, which means no discounted upgrade to the iPhone.

If you want to switch now (for other reasons), then switch, realizing this might mean you pay full price for the Verizon iPhone.

Yes, 2010. Just ****ing wait. It probably won't happen until June anyway. Now we will see this forum filled with Verizon/iPhone threads. My God.

Also, currently Verizon offers the exact same rate plans as AT& if they are trying to lure people BACK to VZW or over to VZW, why in hell would they raise prices against their main competitor?

Of course, the rep could have been referring to the higher ETFs to stop people from buying phones cheap and flipping them on ebay...but that's already happened. And there's no way to "lock in" a lower rate to avoid that.

AT&T isn't outrageously priced. At least not any differently than Verizon.

A smartphone plan on either starts at $70/month

    So, way to be clueless.

Only major cities like SF and NY seem to have serious drop call issues. I've had 3G coverage in my home city here and have had no dropped calls. I've also just gotten 3G coverage at my place of work and it has been stellar since.

Honestly. Now that I've been with AT&T I have more issues with Verizon than AT&T. To each their own though. Just realize you're wrong about the pricing. Both charge virtually the same price.

I bet you also respond to emails asking for your account information. Verizon rates are identicle to AT&T's. Just look at the droid and iPhone. The plans are the same.

Why anyone wants to switch to Verizon?

Yes, the network is said to be reliable by Verizon but the technology is limited. If you have a smartphone but you can not call and surf the web simultaneously, then what is the point of having it?

maybe the Verizon Iphone will fix all the Idonts. They can just as easily make a new advertising spot that will say IDo this, IDo that....and if it's about a year away that's plenty of time to distance themselves from the current ads they run now.
    just speculating.
Honestly though, being on a GSM and CDMA carriers is a big plus for apple, how would it not be game over for all the other smartphones?

    From a former Verizon customer:

If you want Verizon, then switch. But don't think for one minute that you will be "better off" if you are already a customer when the iPhone comes out (IF is comes out on Verizon). Actually, the complete opposite is true: Verizon only cares about getting you on contract, they won't do S**t for you to get you an iPhone before your new every two date or anything like that. You will be STUCK with whatever phone you choose until you are eligable for an upgrade or you break your contract.

I was with Verizon for several years, (hoping in vain that the iPhone would come to Verizon) and I can tell you that if you want the iPhone on Verizon you'd better wait until the iPhone is actually RELEASED on Verizon. I personally don't think its going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

Yeah, sounds like all the posts about AT&T reps telling people when we were going to get MMS.

I don't see Verizon getting the iPhone any time soon.

This question, in some form, has been asked many times on MR but there still seems to be this persistent rumor that just won't go away and seems to be picking up steam.

Truthfully, I think you have a better chance of flapping your arms really fast and lifting off into the air than a CDMA version of the iPhone coming to Verizon. It is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

I'm very willing to bet that we see a Verizon iPhone when they switch their network to LTE but that is still years away. I think Apple's model has been pretty transparent- they want a one size fits all device that works internationally. CDMA is going the way of the dinosaur sooner than later and I it would just be bad business, in my mind, for Apple to commit resources to a phone that has such a limited market.

If you go traveling a lot, I suggest you just stick with T-Mo/AT&T. Higher chance of your phone working in the other country.

I know that they're going to expand to other networks at some point because it's the only way to gain the marketshare that Apple wants but it's not going to be an exclusivity with Verizon.

And, as is, I wouldn't switch. I get great at&t service in Chicago. Verizon sucks in this area.

Well, the commercials sure make it easy for them to if they wanted to. In the holiday ads, they specifically don't bash the iPhone, but rather AT&T

    Oh God...

PHASE II of retarded Verizon iPhone rumors has begun!

PHASE I: Totally unreliable news report
PHASE II: Some guy talked to his "Verizon Tech" who has inside knowledge of iPhone development
PHASE III: Some guy's great aunt's sister's roomate who is Steve Job's second cousin told him through the loop that the iPhone for Verizon is going to actually be a transformer and can turn into a corvette.

    Let it begin...
