So the Absinthe 5.0.1 JB for my 4s was my first time jailbreaking, i followed the instruction on modmyi and it went perfectly. I have avoided all iOS updates etc and have had a mostly smooth JB journey.

Now that the JB for 5.1.1 is on its way I just wanted to check what needs to be done to prep for it. If I upgrade to 5.1.1 I lose all my current JB apps and settings, I did buy xBackup on Cydia and periodically do the backup there, is thall all that's needed? When JB comes out, upgrade to 5.1.1, rejailbreak, get xbackup back and do a restore?

Any guidance is appreciated!

Save your hashes for every firmware version with TinyUmbrella.
Do not update until after new jailbreak tools are released.

Pretty much, make sure you also got a up to date iTune backups, and your SHSHs backups.

Each jailbreak is deferent and in some cases you may (or may not) required to do some "pre-Jailbreak" or "Pre-Upgrade" activities, but for that you have to wait for the tool to be release and see.

But for most cases, you should be 98% cover with what you have.

Is there a step-by-step tutorial on how to properly use TU and save your blobs and access them from Cydia? Thx

Download TinyUmbrella, run it, plug your phone in.
Go to advanced Tab, uncheck "get hashes from Cydia".
Go back to main tab and click save hashes (you should get 5.1.1 hashes).
Do that for every iDevice for each new firmware version.

Thanks for the replies. Not entirely sure what TU is, but if i'm on 5.0.1 now, when I save my hashes will that be 5.0.1? When they are saved are they definitely needed later or just in case?

Did as you suggested and I get the following info in the log:

05/16/2012 15:45:13.790 Caching shsh files...
05/16/2012 15:45:13.799 Found [0] shsh files to cache...
05/16/2012 15:45:13.802 Cached [0] shsh files
05/16/2012 15:45:13.806 You are using the current version of TinyUmbrella. 05/16/2012 15:45:13.811 Loaded History...

Am I doing something wrong here? 1st time using TU, so pardon my ignorance. Thx

Did you uncheck get hashes from Cydia, doesn't sound like it.

Here is the advanced settings in TU. I did un-check "request SHSH from Cydia."

Is the phone plugged in ? I don't see it in left panel ?

Should show connected devices line with phone 4S underneath that.

Yes it's plugged it directly to the USB port on my Windows PC.

This might be a stupid question but does iTunes need to be running?

Try a different port, if its not showing up in the left panel, its not connected. iTunes is not necessary.

I've tried every USB port and it's still not showing up in the left panel. I hear the audible sound when I plug in my iPhone followed by the "AutoPlay" window popping up, so I know it's not a USB port problem.

I'm baffled.

Question---

What does/is TU used for, and in what situations would you use it??

saving shsh blobs so encase you want to go to a previous firmware after apple stopped signing them. Also encase your girlfriend, wife, lover, dog or goat accidentally upgrades and removes your jailbreak.

You could try re-installing TU, then a reboot

Did that already - still a no go.

I'm using Win7 (64 bit).....I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Also I launched TU as "admin" and still nothing detected.

Bleep me.

Try putting TU in compatibility mode for Win XP and changing it to run as admin for all users. Might help.

Mabye try XP compatibility mode.

Also, you could also use ih8sn0w's tools or even redsnow to save hashes as well–TU isn't the only option.

I'm almost positive win7 home premium 64 bit can not run virtual xp.

Also, did you try updating to the latest java for windows? I think even though it's a 64 but machine, you still need the 32 bit version of java. But definitely make sure you are using the newest java and newest TU.

XP Compatibility Mode is not the Windows XP virtual machine. It's an API level compatibility tool that was first introduced with Windows XP. Also, make sure you run TinyUmbrella as an administrator by right clicking its icon and selecting "Run as Admin".

Wow you might have just pointed me to a solution for a non iPhone related problem I've been dealing with at work. Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully compatability mode with help resolve that TU issue he's having.
