So is President Obama is going to be tracked by Apple too??

I don't think his security advisor would have allowed the iPad 3G if he was sure it could be used to track the President's location.

I'm even sure he's iPad uses an encrypted server at least, or even runs a special and specifically designed iOS software for the president, including protective and secure privacy features, just like his phone, which cannot be tracked nor hacked.

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," he said, just 9 short months ago.

Did he change his mind once again or does he have a lot to which to be distracted from, cuz he certainly hasn't been making our problems a priority.

That's My President...

...and, I knew he'd get over that whole BlackBerry phase, sooner or later! Oh yeah, and as to the comments wondering why, in 2 whole years, he hasn't yet fixed all of the wars, economic collapse, corporate looting and pillaging, and social neglect of the Golden Child Bush's 8 years of "leadership", I'd point out that Obama has taken less vacation time in those 2 years, than GWB took in his first 6 months. I'm gonna give him a bit more time to patch up this damaged nation, personally. Hope the iPad helps you have a bit more R&R, Mr. President!

Apple does NOT track iOS users.

History sits on the device, just like your email, passwords, etc that APPLE DOES NOT TOUCH.

Exactly.

I know, the trouble is explaining that to some little-minded people who have phobia of military-grade location protection and are paranoid with security privacy. On average, you get tracked by 300 different CCTV cameras daily and no one seems to complain then.

The way I heard it on the local news, the danger (or I should say "danger") is that when you sync the iPad with iTunes, the info is vulnerable to being accessed on your PC by someone through your backup file. The suggestion is to encrypt the backup file.

Personally, I think this "astonishing revelation" is the equivalent of saying that if you have uncovered windows in your house and walk around naked, someone might see your private parts. When you have a device with a GPS, and a feature that allows you to find it, that's exactly what it's supposed to do. Everything has its potential abuses.

Do you guys think this is an attempt by Obama to get re-elected by choosing to use the cheaper polyurethane grey smart cover instead of the expensive leather cover? I think if he was caught using the leather smart cover people would get mad and not re-elect him.

oh puhlease. how many apple apologists will there be?

its even riskier, to have all your location history log stored on an unencrypted file, consolidated.db, on your local HDD.

and if you think apple isn't tracking your location, then you're sorely mistaken. a lot of companies do it, including google, wireless carriers, etc.

at least with google, though, android OS asks you if you want your location tracked by google.

So any sources for all this? I mean, yes, the data is on the device, but do we have any proof it is sent back to apple?

Same with Google and wireless carriers?

i know without a doubt, that location services on google were used to increase efficiency for their navigation application, especially with traffic, ETA timings.

i mean, i would think none of us here enthusiasts are too surprised by this finding at all.

i mean, my BMW is tracked wherever I go because of BMW Assist. should that mean they are invading my privacy? hardly.

at the same time, i think its those that are totally new to the smartphone world, are people actually 'surprised' by the news.

lets be real, wireless carriers know where you are at any given point in time as well.

Big deal. I don't care what President Obama or anyone else uses. I assume they use what best fits their needs, just like I do.
