is there a way to prevent an external drive from unmounting? the reason I ask is because I use it for time machine (its partitioned into two) and the other half for my music. I wanted to make sure other people that use my computer to not accidently unmount my external drive.

If you go to Finder Preferences, you can choose for external disks to not be shown on the desktop or in the sidebar, which would reduce the risk of someone accidentally unmounting it.

Create another account. If people want to play your music, simply just copy the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' and 'iTunes Library' to the other account and all the music etc will be in that accounts iTunes.

Means your data is kept private too - when a mate wants to use my laptop, I always switch to another account I created to prevent anyone from messing with my settings or data.
