I use CarPlay but I use my car's built in navigation most of the time. Is there any way to prevent Maps from starting every time I connect to CarPlay? It just wastes battery even though I am not using it. Seems a simple ask but I suspect it is not......

The only workaround I have found so far is to tap on MyRadar, which IOS seems to see as a "navigation" app. It then opens MyRadar when I connect instead of Maps. MyRadar MIGHT be less CPU intensive, but I would really prefer it to not open ANY app when I connect unless I specifically ask it to.

I don’t see anything from my phone unless I tap on the CarPlay icon on my car’s screen. Maps doesn’t run unless I’m using it. I never use the onboard navigation function but Maps doesn’t run unless I launch it. It may be something with your car’s system.

If Maps is already onscreen when I flip to CarPlay, I'm pretty sure Maps is running in the background as soon as I connect to ParPlay..... the phone gets noticeably warm and it doesn't get warm if I manage to get it to default to MyRadar or when it sometimes just stays on my streaming radio app....

I never have Maps active unless it’s onscreen or I have navigation running. I have one button on my car’s screen that pulls up Maps if I want it, but unless I set a destination there or on the phone itself it doesn’t run in the background when I’m using another feature, usually the radio on my car’s screen. Never have had the phone get warm when I wasn’t actually using it. Maybe others have an idea.
