Preview has never shown animated gifs. It shows the frames of the gif in a drop-down, but it won't animate and loop on it's own. It's ridiculous.

"Never" is incorrect. I originally kept a copy of Preview v2.1.0 from 10.3.9 which included the option "Play" button in "Customize Toolbar".

But yes, it's a stupid omission considering previous versions supported it!

hi, sorry to dig up a dead thread from the grave but i found it via google when i was looking for ways to animate gifs automatically when opened.

if you go to "get info" for any gif file, go down to 'open with' and select your favourite app that can animate gifs (safari, firefox, quicktime, etc). make sure you select the 'use this application to open all documents like this" by clicking 'change all'. that way, every time you open a gif, it doesn't open in preview but in another, more gif friendly app.

For me this is not a dead thread. Working on a brandnew iMac for a week now (after more than 20 years on pc) and loving it, except for this. The option "change all" is in grey and simply doesn't work! HELP?

Unlock the lock icon on the bottom of the 'get info' window.. click on it and enter your password.

Dead thread reviver :)

To all the post Panther people, the slideshow button is the "Play" button but it does not auto play
In the slideshow window, pressing spacebar, arrow left/right or arrow up or down will advance the gif to the next image.
If you hold any of the above buttons the gif will play.
Most gifs are uber short so this works for all my clients and is better than a secondary app.

$.02

Brilliant, and you can stop the play mid-stream.

Simples :)

Uploading gif's to facebook

Hi everyone,

Like you, I was disappointed when I couldn't open gif's correctly with my mac. I downloaded the Xee app, and now it works like a charm. Thanks for the tip!

But the reason I wanted to be able to open Gif's, was because I wanted to upload some of them to my facebook account. Can anyone here help me with that?

Thanks in Advance!
