Preview failing to save edited files

I get this dialog when attempting to save/close an image that's been cropped or otherwise edited. Happens when I try to export too. If I select the "duplicate" option the new file won't save/close either. Has been going on the last few versions of Sonoma. Anyone else?

I've seen something similar when the file has been opened from a disk image or network location that is no longer available.

Thanks but these are all local files, usually generated by a scanner (if that's any clue).
