The main problem is the early upgrade pricing. The iPhone is the only one that offers this type of pricing, and it is what is causing all of this mess.

What technology is in the iPhone that would make it cost twice as much as an iPod Touch? The speaker can't be that expensive; is it the chip?

I think it's 'she', but none the less... how can that even remotely be compared to what we are paying, and the plans/data access we have here?? That is SO apples to oranges. Pun intended.

First, those plans are seriously outdated and there are more plans that you can have with the iPhone. Second, I've seen people from the U.S. complain than even the lowest iPhone plan from AT&T is an overkill for their needs: some people don't need unlimited data because they're around wi-fi all the time, some people don't text, some people hardly use any minutes...

The difference is that here, if I buy a phone without a contract, I have a choice: I can have a plan with just a 250MB of data and a few texts and minutes and pay next to nothing a month. If I need more, I pay more and I get more.

In the U.S., with the iPhone, it doesn't matter what your needs are, you have to have a plan that costs at least $70 a month. That was my point.

Its a bit of give and take. I'm a mobile data whore (I spend alot of time on wifi too) and try to get my moneys worth, especially with some of the cloud/mobileme based apps. But I never , EVER use more than 90 minutes a month, if that. I do most of my business in person.

So I subsidize chatter boxes and light data users subsidize me.

Right, but the phone is software. Does Apple really need to charge 300 dollars more because of it?

You're joking right? The actual phone part of the iPhone consist of a radio that is its own subset of different hardware. Why do you think the iPhone is thicker than the ipod touch? Do you really think jobs would have added bulk for the hell of it?

The phone is not software based bro. There is no hacking an ipod touch to "enable" this mythical cellular radio thats hanging around.

No, the phone component is hardware and software.

But even if it were not, I'll never understand where people get the idea that it's somehow wrong to charge more based only on software differences in a device.

It's all relative. I could never get by on a plan so limited. I use my phone a LOT. Texting as well as voice and internet, e-mail, etc.

And, actually, your point was to justify paying $600 dollars for your iPhone vs my $199. I'm glad that your choice works for you. If I could get by on that kind of limited usage, I may have sprung for the full pop as well. I do pay in the neighborhood of $600 more than you per year for my plan, but my phone cost me $400 less. So, for the extra $100 per year, (on my 2 year contract), I get all the phone, internet, text and e-mail usage I need... So the trade off is fine for me.

Jesus Christ I know that, "bro". What I'm asking is does the components in the iPhone costs 300 dollars? Could Apple get away with charging 150 dollars less than 600 dollars and would they still be earning a profit? Is the phone tech in the iPhone that much more advanced than a regular flip phone (remember I'm talking internal hardware not software)? It's generally a very basic phone, the cool stuff like Visual Voicemail comes from the iPhone software.

I'm no marketing genius by any stretch of the imagination, but I do know that there is a HUGE markup on ALL electronics, especially cell phones. If a company isn't making 300% on their electronic commodity, they're doing it wrong. It's not about what the individual components are physically worth, it's about what the public wants, and what the market will bear.

As I said, those plans are outdated and my plan is none of those. I have unlimited calls and 1500 texts a week and I only pay $25 a month. So basically yeah, I have all the usage I need for about $600 less in the course of 2 years.

My only point with this is that I think AT&T should give their users a choice. You could buy the phone subsidized and have a certain kind of plan or buy it out of contract with another kind of plan. With the iPhone AT&T forces you to have a $70 bill it doesn't matter what kind of usage you have. For heavy users those plans make sense. But for light users it doesn't.

EDIT: Sorry if I'm being a bit harsh but I'm annoyed at all the people that act like it's stupid to pay full price for the iPhone. It might not work in the U.S. since you still pay the same for the cell phone service whether on a contract or not but things are not the same everywhere.

Right now it's:

Eligible customers: 199/299
Non-eligible customers:399/499 Personally I think Apple or AT&T could do very well with dropping the price of this buy 100 dollars. It's like saying "Hey, you want the iPhone but you are not eligible for the 199/299 price point? Well you can pay 100 dollars more. I don't know, maybe it's not worth it to Apple or AT&T.

Fully non subsidized-599/699

It's not about what the individual components are physically worth, it's about what the public wants, and what the market will bear.

It's also about covering the millions of dollars spent on years of research and development, manufacturing, transportation, marketing, warranty repairs, tech support, and still coming out ahead.

I definitely see your point. I think a lot of people would prefer Pay as you Go or Prepaid and unlimited 3g.

You're telling me that you have an AT&T unlimited plan for $25/month?
You're telling me that you actually need an unlimited plan? Companies like AT&T are relying on people on the net to shill and fear monger people into thinking that they need an unlimited data plan instead of a capped one. I know that I got fooled into getting the 6GB data plan for 30 bucks per month. I could have been paying 5 bucks per month less for 500MB per month. I have yet to go over 400MB for month.

BTW. Your "unlimited" plan has a soft cap of 5GB per month.

Well... ya got me there. I guess I should move to Portugal.

Interesting though... When looking at plans for Portugal, they don't seem to offer unlimited anything:

https://loja.vodafone.pt/homephone/iPhone/tarifario/

You wouldn't be trying to pull our collective legs with less than forthright information, would you? And it seems that it's 1500 texts per month, not per week.

This is a provider that belongs to Vodafone. You're looking at specific iPhone plans, but I can use any pre-paid plan I want and then just add a data package.

And it is 1500 per week, where did you see per month?

I don't think that I said I have an unlimited plan, ... but if I did, let me correct that now. I have all the minutes and access I require. I don't use my home phone much at all, so I tailored my plan to my needs.

It looks like this:

  • ANYTIME MINUTES 450
  • NIGHT/WKND MINUTES 5000
  • MOBILE TO MOBILE Unlimited
  • INCLUDED FEATURESMONTHLY COST
  • 5000 Night and Weekend Minutes $0.00
  • 450 Rollover Minutes $0.00
  • Unlimited Expanded Mobile to Mobile $0.00
  • AT&T Direct Bill $0.00
  • AT&T Domestic Long Distance $0.00
  • AT&T Roaming Long Distance $0.00
  • GSM Coverage Area $0.00
  • ADDED FEATURESMONTHLY COST
  • Manage Features
  • B2B Txt Msg 750 25% $7.49
  • BSD 200 BONUS MINS $0.00
  • Data Plan for iPhone 3G $30.00
  • Standard International Long Distance $0.00
  • Tracking feature UMTS $0.00

Per my account, I have only two choices regarding Data. Either $30 or $45/month. One of these two are required by AT&T to be connected with an iPhone.
