Primary screen randomly changes monitors

I have had this issue forever across multiple machines and OS X versions. The primary screen with the dock will randomly change monitors. This will not be reflected in the display settings but cycling the menu bar will fix it.

Are your monitors old?
The boot process doesn't seem to wait a heckuva long time for a second monitor to show up before it picks a 1° display.

No, they are not and has happened with different machines and monitors over the years. No one else has experienced this?
