I think I have a bad screen also, but no where near as bad as that. It looks better when I tilt the lower left corner towards the upper right corner. I'm not really sure what to do?? Is BestBuy accepting exchanges on these bad screens? Even if I can exchange it I don't want to exchange mine for a worse one and go through like 10 iPod touchs till I find the "perfect" one. Does it seem like the majority of the iPod touches are bad or good? I'm not really sure whether to just wait on it...

The behavier is a normal thing guys.. I know you are going to say other wise. but what's happening is apple bought the screen in a portrate format, thus when you look in landscape mode, it looks like that. so I bet you when you look at your screen with dark scene in portrate mode it wouldn't be like that. I have a Motorola Q myself and it looks just like that, and if you tilt the screen everything is normal again. so unless apple decide to buy screen that are designed for landscape this will continue to happen.

The iPhone doesn't have this problem.

You are talking viewing angles now, most good LCD panels have the same viewing angle for the horizontal and vertical - therefore viewing orientation should make no difference.

Of course cheaper screens offer a narrow vertical angle, I assume because screens are normally viewed at a set height, therefore rotate the screen and you have a problem.

I brought it to my work today, where it's alot more well lit, and the Touch looks alot better now... so now I am not sure if I want to return it or not.

the ONLY complaint I have about it is that blacks in dark scenes look washed out when viewing movies.

Other than that, this thing is frickin awesome. If I wasn't so OCD, I'd probably just say it's great and keep it.

29 days to decide.

My Touch has the same problem...jesus. Maybe apple will recognize the defect and replace our units with ones that have correct screens.

It would be a PR Disaster not to. The issue is so widespread that even reviewers (Gizmodo, Engadget, PCWorld) have brought it up.

I got two of them yesterday and they're both doing it...Pretty badly. See?

It seriously looks like this has something to do with Contrast settings and stuff, it could really be that. Cuz not only the videos have the problem, but the whole Touch overall has a darker hue and it's contrast is closer to blacks than to whites like the iphone is. This could be fixed with a firmware update...

No, it really can't. It's an LCD issue.

Not Limited to the Ipod Touch, New iPhones Have This Too

THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO JUST THE IPOD TOUCH.

I purchased a second iPhone on Friday September 14th from the Apple store in Orlando, FL. When comparing it to my iPhone that I had purchased the day after launch day you could clearly see the difference. It had this same exact issue. The black areas almost looked blue because of the combination of the negative effect on the black areas. You guys know the story. But anyway, my main point is that this is not limited to the new touch's, it happens on the new iPhones too. I took my second iPhone back on Sunday and received a new one with the same issues. Store employee said there are two different screen manufacturers. They are kinda disorienting. I'm very unhappy with my second iPhone purchase.

Agreed. My iPhone has the issue too... although not quite as bad as some of the iPod Touch examples shown. I purchased the iPhone a couple of weeks ago, after the price drop. (... and just coincidentally, my iPhone was also purchased in Orlando)

We're paying £269 (or $399) I ain't turning anything down to make it "go away" I'm spending a hell of a lot of money and i expect to get my money worth for a product that actually work. Not something that I'm just going to put up with by changing settings.

You missed my point.

You may have an issue, that's fine. Most people I would say DO NOT and could simply rectify the issue by adjusting the brightness on the Touch. Some companies use brightness as a sole means of controlling contrast.

If you do have a real problem (I believe very few of the units have the issue), by all means I agree.

If you're simply an anal retentive nit picker like most of the people complaining about this, get over it.

Regarding the photo at the beginning of this thread - it looks like the LCD is being viewed off-angle. Is the negative black effect still there if the film is watched with the iPod held vertically, or horizontally but with the button on the left?

'TheMotif', I'd love it if you'd try it out and post your findings...

OK I have a question:

If you find the correct viewing angle, does the negative black effect disappear, or does the video just display like that regardless of the viewing angle?\

I can't believe this.. I was hoping to pick one up in Washington or New York this weekend.. maybe I still will. I'll judge the screens for myself...

sorry there joefinan. video on the ipod touch only plays in that 1 position. No matter how much you flip and rotate your ipod, video only plays in that position.

I took that photo and have already commented about it in this thread and others;

1. It was NOT being viewed off-axis, that shot was taken head on.

2. It looks that way whether viewed horizontally or vertically

3. I'm not an anal person by nature but some of you guys who are accusing people of this problem of being 'picky' deserve a swift kick in the junk.

:D

2nd this, some fanboys are defending apple to such an absurd degree that they think users' benefit is nothing compare to apple's profit or reputation.

i have an 8gb and the negative aren't a constant problem, only on certain videos and it's not overwhelming to the point where i need a new ipod

gradient pictures

here are some gradient pictures of my bad screen:

You can see clearly how it goes from light-dark-light from a straight on view

Once at an angle, the gradient appears OK

(I used this test as suggested by another user of this forum)

Just got off the Phone with Apple Care.

I just got off the phone with apple care, The guy I spoke to told me I would need to send my iPod Touch in for an engineer to look at it. Or I could take it back to the Apple store I bought it from and exchange it. But the store does not have any in stock. So I asked if I could just get one sent to me from Apple then I would send mine back, but they said I could not do that. I was thinking what difference does it make if I get one from the store or directly from Apple. What gives? :(
