Popular Ubisoft game Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is available for download from the Mac App Store as of today, allowing Mac users to play the title for the first time since its January 2024 launch.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is an action adventure game that joins a long list of other Prince of Persia titles that are based on Persian mythology. Players take on the role of Sargon, a warrior journeying to Mount Qaf to free a captured prince. Gameplay consists of fighting enemies, solving puzzles, seeking out treasure, and completing quests.

The game has been available on Windows machines, the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation consoles, and Xbox consoles, and it received largely positive reviews.

The Mac version of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown uses Metal3 for a smooth gameplay experience on Mac machines, with a Mac that has an M1 chip or later required.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown can be downloaded from the App Store for $19.99. [Direct Link]

Wow... $27.49 CAD ?
It's $54.99 CAD on PlayStation 5.

Is there a catch? It's absolutely worth it. It's been released this year. It sits at 86% on Metacritic and the user score agrees with that.

On some platforms (eg Steam) the game requires an Ubisoft account even though it's not purchased from their store.

Does anyone know if Mac App Store version is subject to same imposition? A bit of a nonstarter for a single player game.

There is a button to skip linking an Ubisoft account, thankfully. Linking one enables cloud saves between platforms, but it's not mandatory. The game can also be launched and played without an internet connection, which is nice.

However, as of version 1.0.1, the game seems to have an issue in the form of an artificial frame rate cap. The game itself runs well, but the FPS is capped at 60 with uneven frame pacing regardless of the display's actual refresh rate. Really hope that they remove the cap or add an option to change the target frame rate as soon as possible.

In addition to the artificial frame rate limit, the game is also missing the option to purchase the recently released paid DLC. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved soon.

(There are also reports of some Xbox controllers not working correctly with the game, but I can verify that at least the DualSense works as expected with correct button prompts and all.)

But apple is. That's not the difference. Simply apple is a less sought after gaming platform, hence games are often priced more competitively to encourage sales..
I bet Apple is taking a significantly less cut. You’re right though it’s to encourage gaming. When you have high demand, you can charge whatever you want and people will pay for it. That’s just basic supply and demand. Sony knows if you spent $500 for a PlayStation you only have one place to buy games. They can set the price whatever they want and people will pay it.

Is it? You think Ubisoft is the feds or something? I find it pretty darn handy to continue my progress across all platforms.

Well Ubisoft has a pretty poor reputation. If they required an account to play a single player game I simply wouldn't buy it, even if it were useful as you pointed out. The other reason is that I am simply sick of the sheer number of logins and launchers required to play modern games. It makes the experience of launching the game take longer and adds roadblocks (finding passwords, fetching the phone for two-factor auth). My time is precious (the irony of using it to complain on macrumors is noted) and there are plenty of products that respect it.

Other companies have done this with recent Mac releases. The low price gets attention and draws in folks. Could mean higher revenue in the short run. I’m guessing it’ll be more expensive in a month or so.

How do you know Apple is charging Ubisoft 30%? I’m genuinely curious because I didn’t think they released the details publicly.
That’s Apple’s standard cut. Just as it is Sony’s. No one knows if there is any specific agreement in either platform so they just assume it’s standard for both.

But how else can cross platform progress reliably work on consoles and PCs without it being handled by publishers of the actual game?

Considering storefronts and launchers have long-term authentication not unlike Steam’s and at times better features when it comes to actual gaming (ready to play installations)

And I say this as a pretty invested Steam user having a Valve Index, Steam Controller, and OLED Special Edition Steam Deck.

It’s just matching the Autumn Sale price on Steam, where the Standard Edition is still only available for Windows. No word yet if they’ll add in-app purchases for available DLC on Mac App Store version.

If a user doesn't want that feature it shouldn't be requisite to sign up. The main reason publishers do it is to collect data and facilitate micro transactions. If it provides any end benefits to the user it's mostly coincidental.

Steam is pretty good. The others, not so much. These storefronts auth systems are highly geared towards frequent players. Me? I find myself having to log in almost every time. Also: the auth won't remember you on game streaming because you appear as a different machine every time.

Yeah, Steam is pretty good. Which is why it's so annoying if you play, say, an EA game on Steam which launches its own launcher in turn. Launchers (and logins) should be optional.
