Hello there

I searched before posting and there are indeed plenty of posts. However, someone with a Brother printer will advise this brand and someone with a Canon will advise their brand…

I read some reviews but I’m struggling to find a reliable website.

I’m looking for a printer/scanner compatible with M1 chips & Ventura.

I was thinking of Canon or a laser printer from Brother.

However, I can’t make my mind on a model.

I just need to print 10 pages a month but I have some paperwork to do at the moment so I kind have no choice to get one as soon as possible.

Thanks for taking the time to read my message.

I'm also looking at buying a Brother inkjet. Ideally a cheapish one as I don't need anything fancy - just simple b&w and colour with a scanner.

Which model would you recommend?

Owning multiple businesses we've had many different printers, for different purposes, over all the years and I've had good experiences with Brother and Cannon, but as always it all comes down to what you need it for and how much you are willing/able to spend on it. We currently have a HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series at home. I use a M1 MBA and a M2 mini and it prints and scans great.... zero issues with it.

I'd only be using a printer occasionally to print stuff for the kids, so it needs to be cheap and cheerful. I don't think we'll ever need to print high quality prints.

My Canon inket that i had for what felt like forever finally died. I really soured on Canon when they stopped updating the driver that controlled the scanner in my printer. I replaced it with a Brother HLL2305W laser printer. I love it for my sparse printing with my M1 Pro running Ventura.

The HLL2305W seems a great choice. I’m looking for one with scanner, too.

I also highly recommend Brother "all in one" LASER printers.

Thanks lads.

I need colour too so the 2305W isn't for me. But I did find this which seems to be the colour version of the 2305W https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brother-HL...efix=brother+hll+colour+printer,aps,68&sr=8-3

The description states "small office / home office printer" Not so sure about the "small" part 😆

I have shortlisted 3 printers from Brother:

  • DCP-1610W : 385mm (W) x 340mm (D) x 255mm (H) 155.52 eur
  • DCP-1612W : 385mm (W) x 340mm (D) x 255mm (H) 167.52 eur
  • DCP-L2530DW : 410mm (W) x 398.5mm (D) x 272mm (H) 204,24 eur

I've had my HP LaserJet MFP M29w (now discontinued) for years and had no issues at all. In fact, I've never had an issue with HP printers as far as them working on Macs (printing or scanning) - and I don't have to install any drivers or extra software from HP.

No matter what, I'll never buy another inkjet printer again. My needs are simple, so a B&W laser fits me perfectly. Sometimes I wish I could print in color, so someday I'll invest in a color laser printer. They're more expensive at the start, but you don't have near the issues you have with ANY BRAND inkjet printer.

I never print in colour. In fact, hardly print at all. It's mainly for the kids who need to print for school every so often. We could just go to the print shop and pay them, but sometimes the convenience is needed at home.

You mean... leave the house? What the heck is wrong with you, man? That's just crazy talk.

I love that I don't have to worry about ink drying up any more because I infrequently print.

Or the 25 minutes of head cleaning & alignment when you turn the printer on after not using it for a while (Epson was famous for this). Not to mention the DRM chip they put in the ink cartridge to artificially designate it as "expired" - even though you just bought it 2 days earlier (because apparently it sat in the store for 6-9 months before it actually sold).

I bought the cheapest color laser I could find from Brother about 4 years ago. Other than flakey wifi (I leave it on ethernet), it's been great. I also only print at most 10 pages per month and would never go back to an inkjet.

I wouldn’t recommend an inkjet. But if you’re gonna get one anyway ;) look at the cost of ink, and decide based on that.

You guys are swaying me. I would love a lazer, but the sizes of these is putting me off. Will try and rejig things around and see if I can fit one in.

I remember sitting there thinking "I just want to print one page. What is this thing doing for so long?"

Mine is about the size of the scanner/inkjet combo that I replaced so that was a big positive.

Another fan of Brother laser printers, here.

Actually, I have had a basic (and small) black and white Brother laser printer for some time (and I agree with @MacGizmo in that I will never, ever, ever again purchase an inkjet printer) which (touch wood, cross fingers, toes, other digits) has never given me any trouble.

Recommended.

Do you remember the name of the reference of the printer, @Scepticalscribe ?
It is sitting here beside me, or, rather, just across from me.

If memory serves, it is the ancestor of - or a close kin of - the Brother HL-1110 A4 Mono Laser Printer.

It could even be this exact model, but - a quick check online reveals a slightly different - re the actual colour - current model. Mine is a black body with a white top; online, the model that is closest to this has those colours reversed.

Anyway, while I can't see its name, I think it is the Brother HL-1100; before that, several years ago, I had the Brother HL-1000, - again, it never gave me a minute's bother - which I gave as a gift to a friend.

The printer is a very basic black and white laser printer - when I bought it, I wanted good quality trouble-free laser printing - which is what it does.

Like @MacGizmo, I had tired of inkjet printers; fussy, and expensive - you constantly needed to replace the inkjet cartridges.

My printer simply prints - it does nothing else. No scanning, no colour, but I find it excellent. Above all, I find it reliable, even if I haven't used it for a month or two.

The other (huge) plus is the really small - compact is the word they use, and with good reason - footprint.

If you do buy it, I recommend that you buy a second cartridge at the same time, so that you have it to hand if (and when) required.

Anyway, I recommend the (small) Brother Mono laser printer strongly.

Now, some day, I may treat myself to a version with a scanner, but, for now, I simply print off what I need, sign it if necessary, and proceed to trot off on foot to a small (excellent) local business which will happily scan it for me.

If necessary, I will send the completed and scanned document to its intended destination from there, or transfer it to a USB stick, whereupon I usually email it from my own computer on my return home.
