I am operating Yosemite on my IMac and have a HP 6600 printer, scanner, fax connected to it by a USP connection. The printer works fine most of the time but when I want to scan something I usually have to delete the printer and then add it again. Now I am trying to scan a page and after opening the scanner, selecting the feed (glass or feeder) the scan button won't light up for me to select it. I have deleted and re-added the HP device twice now but the scan button looks like it is still not highlighted for me select it. I have gone to the HP website and downloaded the software for this printer and installed the software successfully. I am able to bring up a document and print it fine, just can't scan. Any suggestions???

I never use the buttons on these all-in-one printers. I always just go into Image Capture to initiate a scan. Does using Image Capture work?

This is one of my major concerns/frustrations with OS X.

I have an older scanner that the manufacturer doesn't provide drivers for anymore. They communicated that I ought to use Image Capture and OS X's drivers. On the flip side, on Windows, Epson is perfectly content to rollout the software and drivers for that scanner, in fact I use it in Windows 10 no problem at all. Kind of frustrating that many printer/scanner makers stop providing the software that usually has a lot of usefulness.

If you check Apple's supported printer index you'll see the HP6600 remains supported and in fact Apple recently updated the built-in drivers for it. So don't blame Apple. If HP has stopped supporting it then your issue is with them. I would delete all the HP -written crap completely, plug in the printer, do a Software Update, download Apple's newest drivers, and use it quite happily to print & scan. I use an HP PSC1310 (from 2001) with El Capitan quite happily. So yeah that's a 15-year-old printer working just fine with the current OS X. No problems here.

Oh, I don't blame apple, but rather the printer/scanner makers. I have an Epson scanner and its barely usable under OS X, because the software that made it a very good scanner is no longer being made by Epson.

My post wasn't a ran against Apple but rather the short sighted moves by lazy peripheral makers.

I hate using Image Capture because the features and result are so inferior to what I can get in Windows using the Epson software.
