Hey all.

I'm on a windows network with my MBP. i've activated appletalk and have gone through the add print thing and have found both printers and have added them, but when i went to print i had an error about not being able to connect to SAMBA host.

the two printers are:
Brother HL-5140
Canon pixMa iP3000

those 2 are connected to a Dell Inspiron 9100 that acts as the main computer that the modem/router and printers are connected to.

anything else I need to do to get these printing?

Open Directory Access in the Utilities folder and double click the SMB/CIFS entry in the Services tab. Make sure the workgroup name is the same one in network properties on your Windows computer.

Can you explain your whole network? Have you ever gotten another *windows* computer to print from those printers? Is your Windows firewall set up appropriately?

Okay, good. There're a few parts of what you're describing that still confuse me -- for instance, AppleTalk shouldn't be necessary at all to do this. So can we start over?

System Preferences -> Print & Fax -> Click (+) to add a printer
In the popup -> More Printers -> select Windows Printing at the top and make sure the second box has your Workgroup name
Choose the printer and select the model / driver if you need to.
Finish adding it.

Now print a test page to it.

Do you still get the SMB error?
