I've got the same problem. The instructions above re getting the postscript driver didn't work for me, either. This is getting a little ridiculous now, as I have worked about a week on this problem.

I have a Canon multifunction on my Mac mini running OS X 10.4. I want to print from my Vista Home Premium notebook. The Mac Os X help instructions are useless to me; I don't know anything about configuring an SMB/CIFS network printer. When I followed the instructions from simie, first the IP address of my Mac wasn't detected (I entered it as straight IP address , then as IP address/computer name, etc. etc. ad nauseum). I can't find anything called Generic TCP card; I chose Generic network card. I couldn't find anything called a postscript driver in the list of drivers. I guess Home Premium doesn't support postscript drivers, whatever they are. Oh, well. I'll keep looking.

Ya, the steps above regarding the postscript printers did not work for me either. *sigh*...

Patience is required here!

When you look at the printer drivers on any version of Windows, you will see something like e.g.

HP 2000 PS

The PS at the end stands for Postscript.
The Generic TCP card is Generic regardless what is states at the end.

Thank you very much, and I will try it. Before I do, though, is the IP address a straight IP address viz. xxx.xxx.x.xxx? The reason I ask is that my Mac says "Windows users can access your computer at \\xxx.xxx.x.xxx\username", but Vista Premium won't allow me to enter that.

Try entering the IP address in either of these formats e.g.

192.168.X.X
//192.168.X.X

Or you can type the name of your MAC

Don't bother putting the user account name on the end.

Well I still can't get it going as a local printer. Going back to square one, I made the registry change in LM compatibility level, whatever the heck that is, to 1. I then could detect my printer on the network. However, when it prompted for driver selection, I specified one of the HP PS (postscript) drivers as recommended by simie and others. That worked, but it is achingly slow.

I'm going to try to install it as a local printer again, with the above suggestions and the registry change. If anyone has any ideas about the slowness problem, please let me know.

I appreciate everyone's , especially simie's, help.

Try installing the Adobe Universal PostScript Windows Driver.

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=1500

If the installer crashes on you then you need to install winrar.exe and extract the package contents.
Now locate the Setup.exe and right click and
Go into properties and select compatibility and choose Windows XP
Before you do install extract the PPD drivers from the EXE from the link below.

PPD files here

Printing from Windows Vista to Mac OS X

I have a Vista Premium equipped laptop. Need to print (wirelessly) to a HP 1210 that is physically connected to a Mac Mini running OS X.

There are so many different random wierd attempts posted here to try get this Vista>Mac printing working...and none of them work.:(

If somebody figures out one process that really works, please post VERY detailed step-by-step instructions for dummies. Thanks.

Re: Printing wirelessly from Vista laptop to a shared Mac printer

Re: Printing wirelessly from Vista laptop to a shared Mac printer

...having the exact same problem. My Vista print jobs go through the Windows printer queue and appear in the Mac's completed print queue but never print...

Similar issue here. Print job just goes into cyberspace...

I still cannot print wirelessly from my Vista laptop to a shared Mac printer .

Anybody? HELP!

Success

I saw a lot of people saying they still have not been able to set up their vista machine with a shared printer on their mac.

Here are the steps I did and it seems to be working fine. I did this on Mac OS x Leopard and Vista Business (not sure if that matters)

First on the Mac, go into System Preferences - Sharing and make sure Printer Sharing is checked and make note of the name of the printer (ie HP Color LaserJet 2605dn) Also from the Sharing form you can find the name of your mac under the File Sharing Service ie "User's iMac")

Second from the Vista machine; Click the windows button and go to Network
From Network - click Add Printer in the header
Choose the option "Add a Network, wireless or Bluetooth printer"
Click Stop and click "The printer that I want isn't listed"
Check "Select a shared printer by name" and type in the computer name and the printer name (ie \\Users-iMac\HP Color LaserJet 2605dn) note the computer name has no spaces or '
You should be prompted for your login and password for your Mac and you may need to search for the driver to install. If the driver is not in the list be sure to update your list or go to the manufacturer's website directly and download the driver.

That should be it. Hope this helps someone. It was frustrating try to figure this out :)

Success — Alternate Method

My thanks to Simie for the tip which finally led to my network printing working flawlessly. Hopefully someone else will be able to benefit from this discovery and save themselves the mental anguish.

I've chosen not to include the relevant OS X printer sharing setup, as that has been addressed in previous posts.

First of all, please follow these instructions kindly provided by Simie:
Try also opening Programs and Features and select Turn Windows features On or Off.

Under Printing Services turn on LPD Print Service and LPR Print Monitor.

Now..

1. Add a Printer
2. Add a Local Printer
3. Create a new port -> LPR Port
4. 'Name or address of server providing lpd' = hostname or IP of the Mac you are printing through. e.g. Takarii-PC OR 10.1.1.7 (Yours will be different)
5. 'Name of printer or print queue on that server' = the printer's name on the network. e.g. mine is MFC-7420 (Once again yours will be different)
6. Select the correct driver for your printer and install it.

You should be able to figure out the rest from here :)

Hope this is helpful.

Another altnernative

Here is the approach that worked for me:

http://forums.legitreviews.com/about17597.html

at step 8 of the instructions: go ahead and choose "Add a Network, Wireless or Blue Tooth..." in vista, and then choose "The Printer that I want Wasn't listed". Then enter the ip address of the new printer (as described here in step 8).

The two preceding posts in this macforums thread did not end up getting successful prints for me (they seemed to come close), but the method of this "legitreviews" poster did work for me. This method has the added advantage of getting you into the unix underpinnings of OSX, using the "terminal" program, etc.

Hope this helps someone.

FYI - it's also pretty easy to just hook a printer (with a nic) up to a network and just print to the network printer.

Mac OS finds them easy via Bonjour
Windows finds them as long as you have the right IP address.

That's the method I use, and it works great. It also allows me to keep my printer out of the way, as I rarely use it.

Two Years Later . . .

Here it is two years later and I haven't found a solution to the problem described above. Like Sean7512 I chose the the Generic Network Card but ran into a brick wall looking for PostScript Drivers. I have my Vista Home Premium fully up-to-date but can't find anything resembling PS drivers.

I tried the actual drivers, but that didn't work.

I installed Bonjour for Windows, but even though it told me the installation was successful, it doesn't seem to be anywhere to be found, even with an Advanced Search.

Finally, to add insult to injury, I can SEE the printer over the network and if I try to add it from the network it appears to work but won't print a test page.

After two years there has to be a simple solution. Does anyone know what it is?

Success!!!

I finally got it working using the solution in #35. However, I think the key factor was that I followed the advice given in #28.

I'm using a HP 2600n and if I use the correct 2600n drivers it appears to install correctly, but the print job just disappears into cyberspace.

I tried downloading the PS drivers from Adobe and got a severe crash that I couldn't fix.

BUT when I used a HP driver with PS on the end (I used HP 2500 PS) everything worked fine.

Thank you all for your help!!!!

CUPS Solution?

I also tried the solution offered in #36 but it would not accept the passwords of either of the two administrators' accounts that I have set up on that machine (an eMac running Tiger).

Does anyone know how to get around this?

Using Vista, Bonjour and airport extreme

I spent alot of time trying to figure out why bonjour did not see my printer running through Airport extreme. It did when I used XP, but not Vista.
Well it turn out to be a REAL EASY FIX.
On the airport extreme you can have several accesses to your network. the main one you usually keep only for yourself which would have acess to everything. The others you would allow on as a guest with a separate password. they would not have acess to everything on your system. Well i had my daughter's computer signed in as a guest.

That is why Bonjour Never saw the printer.

She did not have acess to file and print sharing. I just connected her computer into the main system and SHAZAM!!!! It works.

You still have to add the printer and driver and set that printer to be the default before you go through the Bonjour wizzard.
I am now 5o% balder and 80 years older, but it's usually the simple things that are wrong. UGH!!!
