I run a mbp 2.5 penryn with OS X 10.5.5.
I use several printers (several HP Laserjet 1020, HP Deskjet 1180C).

Very often, I get a stuck printing process.

I print from several sources (pdf files in preview, mail.app, pages.app,...).

The printing is interrupted, with the print dialog is fixed at "printing processing". I can leave the computer for days like this - the print will not be executed.

This procedure will resolve the issue:

-unplug the USB cable from the printer
-put the mbp into sleep mode (or shutdown)
-waking the mbp up
-plug in the printer

Immediately the printer starts, to print after connecting the USB cable.

What is wrong here?
Can anybody help, to find the cause - this is not only annoying, but takes a lot of time, since it happens very often.

I understand Apples attitude towards advertising an environmental friendly corporate image, but forcing me, to think twice before printing goes in my way, cost me time and works gets not done.

I have a different setup, Epson printers and a Mac Pro, but I've noticed if I connect or unconnect any other USB devices while a print is going it will hang and need to be restarted. So I avoid doing that if at all possible.

This may help

You could try CUPS. Macs have the Unix utility, CUPS (Common Unix Printing Service) to manage your printers. Just cut and past the numbers 127.0.0.1:631 into your browser to access it.
