how do i go about print specific pages from a file/pdf? say i want to print random pages like page 5, 9, 14 that do not go in order so the print X to X pages doesnt work for me. any way to do that w/o having to send the pages for printing individually?

You have to print only page 5, then print again, selecting only page 9, etc.

If you use Adobe Reader for PDFs, the print dialog allows you to enter a mixed range e.g.

1, 3, 6-9, 15, 18-20

etc.

Whereas Preview.app doesn't allow this.
EDIT: Yes it does, see PeggyD's post below - thanks!

Show the sidebar in Preview then ⌘-click to select the non-contiguous pages you want then go to File > Print selected pages or ⌘-⌥-P.
