I am running TurboTax Desktop on a MacBook Pro. It does not allow me to save or export my tax return with all detailed worksheets to a pdf file as a direct operation. It does all me to print my tax return with all detailed worksheets to a printer. Can I redirect that output to a file?

Thank you for any advice.

I don't have a problem (2019 MBP, Sequoia, TT2025).

1) From the Review panel, select File|Print from the menu bar.
2) Select Forms to print
3) Select PDF pulldown

Note that this solution is not specific to TurboTax. Every application that uses the standard printing mechanism (which is hopefully all of them) lets you save to PDF instead of physically printing.

It is possible to create a dedicated print queue that saves to file.

You have to install a CUPS 'filter', which processes the incoming print stream (this can be as little as a few lines of shell/python script in a text file), and then create a printer using that filter.

There are various implementations, such as CUPS-PDF, which is available through HomeBrew or as source-code. I've made my own, which is here:

Creating a print queue that saved to file was a feature in Classic MacOS 7, which hasn't yet been restored to OS X macOS.
