What do the contributors talk about on the private forums? Is it a lot livelier than the general community forum?

They'll tell you they can't talk about it, first rule of Fight Club and all...

It's my sneaking suspicion that it is a place where they talk smack about the non-contributers/freeloaders and the delay you experience in getting promoted after making a donation is directly proportional to how much you were talked about. Those threads/posts have to be eliminated lest someone seek retribution.

We have a rule- nothing discussed in the Private forums leaves the Private forums. We follow that rule always. It's $25 a year and supports the site. I would encourage you to contribute.

Well, if that were the case, it would probably take at least six months for us to let you in after you donated. :)

We have much better things to talk about than smack about non-contributors, namely smack about paying members.

Rumor has it the private forum is where they convert you to using a Windows PC.

All the discussions revolve around how Steve Ballmer's health effects Microsoft's share price, whether or not Microsoft will release a phone on the Verizon network, what colors the new Zune will come in, the release date of "Snow Windows" and how the new Service Pack makes your Lenovo "feel zippier."

It's the bizarro version on the forums you know and love.

See I figure the work required to let me in would be much more than $25 so I'm actually saving the site money by not contributing...

That and I'm a notorious freeloader...maybe that's why I'm so Liberal?:D

We have private forums?!?

Apparently.
I've always wondered why it's almost impossible to find anything about contributing to MacRumors anywhere on this site.
I've stumbled upon the details maybe once or twice by accident over the years -- but you think something like this would be more heavily advertised. Doesn't MacRumors WANT contributions? Or do they want to keep it a more private kind of thing?

It's the 1st question in the FAQ.

Damn, way too slow.

We are like the knights. We make a blood pledge by sending in a sample of our DNA to the central MR private database. Since we are pledged to secrecy you need to pay the $25 to join the club.;)

Yes, I know, which is how I came across it before.

BUT - new people who come to the site might gloss over this kind of thing when they first read the FAQ (if they even do that - not everyone bothers with FAQ's, since they assume to know what's on them).

And yes, if you look around hard enough, you can find a link about contributions on the front page...but it's kind of buried, if you ask me.

I'm just saying a way to contribute should probably be more VISIBLE, no? I don't mean some obnoxious button that appears on every page, interferring with the experience. But I think it would be beneficial to have something that users would notice more often, to remind them to actually contribute. If it's NEVER seen, it's easy to forget about. (I certainly have!)
