Private Relay captures DNS

Probably a stupid question but does having private relay on mean that I can accept cookies and still not be tracked between sites, or do I still need to visit cookie settings for each site to deselect?

That is a very good question. I would like to know for sure as well. It seems to me, (thinking off the top of my head) that if the site requesting cookie use isn't configured properly or has nefarious intentions, one could possibly be tracked. I don't accept cookies now and plan to keep it that way when iOS 15 is released.

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but this is still the case. It wouldn’t be a big issue if I could have Private Relay turn on on a network by network basis or if I could override that particular feature. I just have it turned off for now.

Private Relay (like a consumer VPN service) helps prevent tracking based on your IP address - and only that. Unlike a VPN service, it is restricted to some apps (e.g. Safari).

Private Relay (like a consumer VPN service) does nothing to prevent tracking based on other attributes - e.g. cookies, browser type, computer type, name, fonts, etc.

Looks like you can indeed have private relay control on a network by network basis, when using wifi. Just look at your wifi network settings.

Also for users who have Pihole (like me too) then when you’re not on home wifi you could always WireGuard vpn back to your home network. Piholes website has a great tutorial on how to set this up. iCloud private relay gets sidelined when a vpn profile is in use.

or just turn iCloud private relay off.

I've been running pi-hole for over a year, now, and--in the interim--have been automatically updated to iCloud+, and since updated to Monterey. I had enabled Private Relay on all my interfaces, before knowing that this is specific to only Safari.

Yesterday, I installed a fresh pihole on a more robust SDXC, and came home to something similar to this on my Mac (I did not test with the iPhone):

I forgot to add a setting in pihole-FTL.conf

sudo nano /etc/pihole/pihole-FTL.conf

#; Pihole FTL config file
#; Comments should start with #; to avoid issues with PHP and bash reading this file
PRIVACYLEVEL=0

BLOCK_ICLOUD_PR=false

If BLOCK_ICLOUD_PR is not explicitly set, it defaults to 'true', and will likely elicit a similar response shown in the image, above.

I neither use Safari on the Desktop, nor have I tested this (further) on the iPhone, so I'm not sure if setting to 'false' will affect a satisfactory resolution for you who do.

Just an FYI for the other pi-hole users out there 😉
