Hi everyone,

I am announcing my new compass app for Apple Watch, which is an adaption of my popular iOS compass app. I have wanted to do a watch app for a long time, and when watchOS 6 brought the ability to develop independent Watch apps *and* the Series 5 was introduced with a compass sensor (magnetometer), all the pieces fell into place. But maybe the best part about this app is that it works on Series 1-4 watches as well, by using the device gyro. On those watches, you can turn the digital crown to calibrate the gyro to a known bearing, or to the sun/moon position (shown on the compass dial). This will allow these older watches to show a very accurate true compass direction, and the calibration can be repeated whenever desired (there are certain conditions that will cause the gyro to drift).

I have been testing the app for a while and it's been bulletproof. I have a roadmap of features to implement going forward, which will include other position formats, alternate datums, and so on, to bring the Watch app up to parity with the iOS app. Right now the app offers settings for dark/light UI themes, degree and D-M-S position format, magnetic and true bearing, and meters or feet for altitude. Settings are controlled within the app (tap the gear icon in the lower right).

Pro Compass for Watch is available for any Watch models running watchOS 6 (Series 3-5 currently; 1-2 will be included in a future watchOS update). Intro price is $0.99 USD. More info available here:

I'd like to give out some promo codes, but there is a caveat: nobody seems to have much experience with using promo codes for independent Watch apps, so you will be the guinea pigs. Here are three codes to start -- please let us know below if you have redeemed a code, and if you were successful getting the app installed on your Watch.

TFLWTTK3MRHE

If this works, I'll provide more codes. Note that since this is an independent watchOS app, you won't see anything installed on your iOS device, you'll only see the app on the watch and can manage it within the Watch app on your iOS device.

thanks,

I have learned that the trick is to redeem the promo code on your iOS device. Then once the transaction has completed, go to the App Store app on the watch, scroll to the bottom to your account/purchases, and then install the app on the watch from there. If someone is able to do that successfully, please confirm -- thanks.

Worked. I get slightly different elevation, latitude and longitude than the Apple Compass app. 13 feet lower, ~.20 higher latitude, .6 higher longitude. But I find it visually much easier to see, very easy to configure. Nice!

Thanks. TFLWTTK3MRHE worked.
Whenever i get my first apple watch this friday i will install and test it.
I don’t have even apple watch but i could register this app to my apple account.

OK, thanks for the feedback all, here are a few more codes:

I couldn’t tell from the website; any complications? Do you have live data that would be useful in that context for complications?

Just purchased it and it works great. Can I suggest that the calibration with the crown is done within settings, rather than the main app? The crown is way too easily moved when you’re using it, screwing up the calibration.
