While the XDR has 3 x USB-C ports, is it not the case they are not full-speed and operate at USB2 speeds or at least not as fast as the ports on the Studio Display?

Remember when they introduced it and the live audience laughed when it came up that the stand cost extra?
more of a gasp than a laugh…I still watch it every now and then—poor Ternus, that musta been the first thing that popped into his head when virtual keynotes became a thing. (but then, yknow, $999 stand)

anyway, when to expect a new XDR: never; Apple introduced that and the Studio Display as a one-off to play with our hearts and make us think they were getting back into the display game.

If they plan to introduce 120Hz displays, it will require Thunderbolt 5 speeds which the current M3 generation does not support. Therefore, we'll either have to wait for M4 (early 2025?) or the next gen XDR display will still be a 60Hz and feature other advanced specs to make it a worthwhile upgrade.
While the article is a nice summary of the most up to date rumors, nothing new has been added to what is already known. I hope that the likes of Mark Gurman and Ross Young will chime in soon with some new bits of info on this topic as I am eagerly awaiting the next gen displays from Apple to go along with the M3/M4 Studio....

Ross Young has no real sources and throws out crazy predictions all the time that never come true.

Like the mini LED iMac Pro he said would be available in late 2022 https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...id-2022-not-expected-at-spring-event.2333234/

What about the 27" standalone mini LED display he said was coming in Q1 2023? https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...id-2022-not-expected-at-spring-event.2333234/

Just wild guesses, and no penalties for getting it wrong.

I will never buy any screen with less than 120hz. That’s why I never bought any studio or xdr display.
I want every display to be as smooth as my mobile devices and tv since over a half of a decade.

The fact that a multi billion dollar company can’t deliver that to computer monitor screens is fubar.

At least they should stop bragging about how scary fast their devices are.
Because it seems they are not.

If you bought the stand 4 years ago at $999 and/or a $999 MacBook Air, and fast forward to today - the XDR stand has higher resale value than the MacBook.

100% this. The idea of paying 6k for display with a max refresh of 60hz is asinine. But Apple could have released this one with 30hz and people would have defended it. Just look at the “8gb is all you need and is a pro device” crowd lurking around here.

Honestly, its the most prettiest display I've ever seen. However, its so over priced! I own one and really want one some day. If they could make a 32" version of the Apple Studio Display at a lower price point, I would consider it. I just feel that 27" isn't enough for me. But the Apple Pro Display is still the best one on the market to date.

Pro Display XDR was such a moonshot for a consumer display that I could see Apple keeping it around at a lower price or slightly repackaging it into a new mid-grade display between the ASD and whatever replaces it.

I suppose it depends on the nature of whatever Apple has in the pipelines for a top-end display. If all they do is make a 120 Hz XDR type display, maybe they don't see the value of keeping around a lower max refresh rate display in their lineup as a mid-grade option.

Those USB ports on the XDR have limited bandwidth because the input port has to carry the display signal and that takes up most of the Thunderbolt port bandwidth. There is just enough left over for USB 2.0 speed ports.

it should have had ProMotion from the start.
@TheRoxyTheatre , @UnbreakableAlex ,

The current XDR is already at the limit of what Thunderbolt ports can sustain. Doubling the refresh rate would have done nothing as there was no way to get the data in twice as fast.

ProMotion will have to wait until Thunderbolt 5 comes out, perhaps this fall. Even then, it is not clear if anyone is making a panel that large with that high a refresh rate with 6K resolution.

I'm hoping for a quality display that has multiple inputs allowing me to use my work PC and personal Mac on the same display.
A great idea that will never happen. If anything, Apple would even make the display cable unremovable in the next iteration and continue software-only display adjustments that shut out PCs.

Everything in this post is likely the truth.

Where do I buy a 6K display with >60Hz refresh? How is the image and build quality?

That made me think of the time Scott Forstall was doing a keynote and they showed all of the carriers that supported MMS and they didn’t have AT&T listed. AT&T was still the exclusive US carrier of the iPhone.

“We have over X carriers in X countries that will be supporting MMS…”

(Audience laughs when they realize no AT&T)

Yep and that is probably the incident that has caused them to decide that all events will be pre-recorded from now on. Ever since then they have dropped lots of bombs like that (“you no longer have to deal with a SIM card!”) with no audience there to give the appropriate reaction.

My favorite part of that is that Tim didn’t have the guts to say it himself. Steve used to announce prices proudly.

This is one device I am ok with them updating slowly. They have a bad habit of sometimes releasing products then releasing a revised version less than a year later. I would be livid if I paid this much for a monitor only for Apple to release an updated version soon after. Monitor tech moves slowly enough. Just got to get this thing a high refresh rate which as another poster says will likely require new Mac hardware anyway.
