Hey "guys",

Im looking for a little advice. I have an option to buy a 2020 Macbook Air i5 ($1099) or a 2020 Macbook Pro 13 base ($1099).

It will mostly be used for normal browsing, word, movies, and some light music production (logic pro / garageband)

If the macbook pro wasn't on sale, it would seem a no-brainer. But with the discount am I silly to not go pro over the upgraded Air i5?

Thanks for any help.

Pro is quad core.. Air is dual-core. at a slower speed slightly... If your into music then a pro makes sense if its the same price.

not at all, only pro with 10th gen is quad core, for 8th is dual core. CMIIW

so I guess what Im asking is, all things equal, pricewise, does one make more sense than the other from a value and performance perspective? a 2nd tier Air vs a base Pro?

I'd go pro if price is equal unless you'd really value the lighter weight of the macbook air. Both computers will meet your needs, but the pro will be a little faster.

No, the 2020 Air with i5 is Quad Core (10th gen).

The “cheaper” MBP is 8th gen. Still quad core, but probably slower than the new Air in day to day tasks. However, the Pro makes sense if you need the additional thermal headroom for e.g. video editing, music production et.c. as it can sustain high performance for longer.

Pro also has a better display, but you’re not going to notice unless they are side by side.

Pro has the Touch Bar.

Personally I am content with the Air, but I get why you would choose the Pro. The Pro is probably the better machine, objectively, but I find the Air much more likeable (highly personal opinion). It’s lighter, thinner and the tapered design makes it nicer to use. Also I hate the Touch Bar with a passion.

For music production though, maybe the Pro would be a better option?

thanks guys. It says a lot about the advancement of the Air, compared to the pro. When was the last time a Macbook Air was on par with the base pro?
