Would using a USB mouse on my macbook wear the battery down more than using the trackpad ?

Not a big one.

If anything, you can turn off the trackpad in the preferences while using a mouse I think, and that would most likely negate any power drain of the mouse.

Yup found that thanks. 'Ignore trackpad when mouse is present'

The drain is negligible. Maybe a few minutes off the total rated time. My BT wireless mice last quite a while on a pair of batteries, and they need to transmit. I'd think most USB mice wouldn't drain much power at all, and certainly some must be downright miserly.
