I searched and didnt get a direct answer so I felt I would ask you kind folks here!

I recently got an iPad Pro 12.9 from Verizon on their pay program. (Pay monthly on top of bill). I am now considering returning it as I feel its too big for my needs and will probably get a 9 iPad Pro. My friend however really wants it, and offered to just buy it for me cash and trade me his 9 iPad Pro for the rest.

The question is, rather than returning it can I do that? Since I am still paying on it, is that not allowed? Can someone else like my friend put in a sim and use it?

My assumption is I cannot do that, but figured I would ask before telling him no.

Thanks in advance.

The way I've always understood it is, if it's an installment where you will own the device at the end of the payments, then you can do whatever you want with it as long as you keep paying for it on your bill. If it's a program like Sprint's lease program, where you have to turn it back in, obviously you couldn't sell a leased device. The main issue would be if it's still on your account and your friend wanted to use it on his, he couldn't. You guys could swap the esn's at a Verizon store which would put the 9.7 on your account and the 12.9 on his. Obviously if you were to ask Verizon, they'd tell you that you had to keep it on your account but in reality, as long as you are paying for it, you can use it for target practice if wanted to. Before swapping esn's, ask Verizon to make sure that swapping it won't cause the remainder of what you owe on the iPad to be accelerated to your next bill.

Having said all of that, you may want to just return it and exchange it for the 9.7. I didn't realize initially that you were still in your return period. I know you want to help out a friend, but just remember that you'll be paying for the 12.9 on your bill which is more expensive.

On Verizon, you HAVE to pay the balance owed before it changes hands / accounts. You do not have the right to sell it with an outstanding balance.

If, between the two of you, you can pay the remaining balance, then you can totally swap.

Given this is a recent purchase, that balance is quite substantial. If you want to do the pay-by-month, you're better off swapping at Verizon.

Now, technically, you COULD give the 12.9" iPad to your friend, continue to pay the monthly fee and your friend could swap the SIM, but you would still be paying the wireless bill in addition to the device bill.
