I've been trying this all day. It finds my account, and walks me through the plan options, agreement, and then the Activate button appears. Hit it, and I get a spinning wheel then a message that the activation service is temporarily unavailable, try again later.

Anyone else successful? Not sure if it's ATT, or something with my device or account.

Thanks,

I have the unlimited data plan, don't know if there is any difference in activating process. But mine works like s charm.

Maybe give att a call?

My suggestion is the same as appleforme, Put the apple universal SIM, put it in the IPP box and save it for resale. Go pick up an AT&T SIM, or swap in one you already activated (this is what I did). Then you can sell it to anyone and have the universial SIM for them.

Thanks, that did the trick, went to AT&T store and walked out a few minutes later with an activated SIM, and it's all good now. I'll hang onto the Apple SIM as suggested in case I have a need for it overseas or if I eventually re-sell.

I may do this as well. Did you just walk in and ask for an AT&T SIM for your iPad? What did you have to provide to them, in terms of information? Is there any cost?

You have to activate the SIM... FYI to all, I wanted to pick up a SIM for my old iPad 4 I'm giving to my parents, AT&T no longer gives out unactivated SIM (this is a new policy).

There is no charge, but you have to activate it, so if you have an activation charge with your account (I don't) you will have that.

I don't even think you have to have your ipad with you, you just have to activate it on your account.

That's correct, I didn't have the iPad with me, just told them what device it was for. They added it to my mobile share plan. No charge for the SIM. $10/mo for the device to be on my plan and share my 15gb with my iPhone. I think there was a $15 activation fee (so arguably the SIM falls under that).

They also volunteered to sell me a Pencil but I had already scored one at the Apple Store.

Thanks for the replies. You don't even need to have your iPad with you? So you don't have to provide them with any kind of identifying model or product numbers? Would that mean that I can go into AT&T now and pick up a SIM, while I wait for my iPad Pro to be delivered to me in a few weeks?

And what about removing the device from a Mobile Share Value plan...is there a fee to do that? Obviously, this is not at all being done on a contract, right?

I also have the 15gb Mobile Share Value plan, BTW.

If you pick up the SIM, you have to activate it within a certain amount of time or it will be rendered useless. They tie it to your account right away, but you have to activate it. You can activate it with any iPad IMEI that is not used on AT&T. So if you do that, you will be good. When you put it in your IPP there will not be a problem (even if the IMEI numbers are different). The only problem is if you activate an iphone as an ipad (I did this, and they automatically switched my account from an ipad to an iphone).

Thanks again for all the info. I just got back from AT&T and I picked up a SIM card for my iPad mini. It got added to my mobile share value plan for a $10 per month fee, which I was told I can cancel at any time with no cancellation fees. And, they did not charge me an activation fee.

I did not realize that the iPad would get its own phone number/line as part of this activation. That's interesting.

I mentioned the idea of swapping the SIM card into a different iPad, and the AT&T rep had no problem with it. In fact, he told me that if the SIM card in the iPad Pro is a different size, stop in to see him and he will give me a different SIM for it.
