Problem connecting black macbook to HDTV

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I have a black macbook that i'm trying to connect to my Sony Bravia HDTV. I have it connected through a VGA > mini-dvi. When i connect the macbook to the TV the screen starts to flash and won't make the connection. I know that it's not the cable because i have 2 different ones that i'm trying.

Is there something i have to adjust in the settings? or am i completely missing a step
 
Have you tried connecting to a different TV?

Maybe try checking the display settings under System Preferences while connected.

My setup is mini-DVI -> DVI -> HDMI so I can't directly compare, but I've never had to do anything special.
