Hello all:

I've followed the (supposedly impossible) downgrade instructions on the web for downgrading from IOS7 to IOS6 but iTunes isn't recognizing my downloaded IOS6 file (iPhone4,1_6.1.3_108328_Restore.zip). when I Shift Click Restore iPhone and go to the download directory with the zipped firmware file, it says "no items matched your search". How do I get iTunes to recognize the downloaded firmware files?

Thanks,

Keith

You must unzip the file. The ipsw is what you want, and it is contained in the zip file. Unzip it, and then try it again selecting the file ending in .ipsw.

Yes, I unzipped the zip file containing:
Firmware folder
0482516-005.dmg
0482613-005.dmg
0482679-005.dmg
Buildmanifest
kernel.cach.release.n94
restore

In the "Firmware" folder is:
All_flash (folder containing aa_flash.n94ap.production folder containing several .img files)
DFU (folder containing 2 .dfu files)
USR (folder containing "local" folder, containing "standalone" folder which is empty)
Trek-3.4.03.release.bbfw
Trek-3.4.03.release

No file ending in ipsw anywhere.

Unbundle the .dmg's, the ipsw should be housed in one of them. If that doesn't work - sounds like you got your download from a pretty dodgy site..

I don't know what a .dmg file is but it's not a folder or zipped file so I don't see there is anything I can do with it. None of the website instructions indicated I should need to do anything other than open up the downloaded file and install it in iTub\nes (?!)

I got the download from 3 different links to the apple download server so I don't know what the deal is.

Double click the .dmg, it is a OS X install file. When Apple releases software to developers, it comes packaged in the .dmg install file. Double click it, and it will open in a new finder window with the contents. Within it, should be the .ipsw file.

Well, I click or double click on it and nothing happens. try to unsip it further with 7-zip but nada. I'm using windows but I've unzipped the original download file. Is this an OSx only download?

If you using Mac, select the file and press enter, then rename the extension from .zip to .ipsw. If you are using Windows, then you need to right click and select rename. Change the extension to .ipsw as well.

I unziped my iPhone 4S .ipsw file and got the folllowing:

038-3390-250.dmg 038-3456-396.dmg 038-3456-251.dmg. BuildMainfest.plist Firemware fodler Kernelcache.release.n94 restore.plist

Judging from that, you probably just need change the extension to .ipsw then use iTunes to restore.

i dont know if it helps, but in windows if you unzip the DMG, you will find a file named something HFS. Unzip this one also. The IPSW will be "inside" this one.

don't unzip, just delete the .zip part and leave it ending w. just ipsw

IF that doesn't work get another source. Use iclarified.com to get one.

Tried everything suggested. Itunes (for windows) just doesn't recognize any of the files!

It should at least recognize the file from the link Thierry ba provided.

If not done yet, download and install the newest itunes software from apple and try again. It should work, do not know what the failure could be on your machine...

I downgraded yesterday successfully using the DFU method. However I did run into a problem. It refused to accept the ipsw file I pointed at.

I tried a few times then obtained an ipsw file from another source, and... success.

Get your ipsw from elsewhere.

I got mine here...

Success!!! I downloaded the zipped file from yet a 5th source and there it was in my download directory and was recognized immediately by Itunes. IOS6 back up and running. Phew!!!

PS: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Try changing the extension of the file from .zip to .ipsw

That should fix your issue.

You cannot downgrade a 4s to begin with.

what can I do I want to change firmware don't know how to get the ipsw file out of the zip that I downloaded which when I extract gives me the same as the other user said and am sort of stuck with the worlds most popular paper weight. some one help pliz

You simply can't, as already mentioned a few times.

At this point iOS 7 is going to be your only choice. I'm sorry :(
