problem importing mbox-files into apple mail

Is there a size limit Apple Mail can handle when importing mbox-files / mailboxes?
I have converted my Outlook emails into mbox-format using Little Machine's Outlook2Mail. It worked fine for smaller files, but I have several files up to 1 GB. When trying to import these, Mail just shuts down.

There shouldn't be a size limit. One possible cause of this is a corrupted Mail database - you can try the vacuum speed trick (search the MacBytes.com forums, it's in there) to fix it. If that doesn't help, there's another fix you can use that involves exporting all your mail, creating a fresh, new database, and re-importing it... but since I'm not at my Mac I can't give detailed directions on how this is done.
