Problem playing DVD on LaCie external

I have a G4 800MHZ Quicksilver without DVD player. I bought a LaCie d2 Lightscribe External Dual layer DVD=/-RW Writer but it does not come with software to play videos. I downloaded VLC from videolan and now I can view still photos which are on the DVD, but I cannot view videos. I get the following error message: "main:decoder is leaking pictures, resetting the heap" . I also cannot view CDs. I contacted LaCie, but they simply told me that the player was OK and that it was a software problem. They offered no solution. I would appreciate any help that I can get.

I'm not sure if this is it, but I'd try using this patch, which says it lets you use an external DVD drive. I have not tried it, but I know the author of it to be very knowledgable about DVDs on the Mac.
