Problem replying in Mac Mail 5.2

My Mac no longer shows the 'send dart', or other options alongside the traffic lights at the top of a reply message but is still there for a forwarded message. I have to save my reply to drafts, close and reopen it before that the bar reappears. I am running OS 10.7.4. Any ideas please?

Open a message as if you are going to reply. Check the View menu. What option do you have: Show Toolbar or Hide Toolbar? If Hide Toolbar, select that. All your toolbar icons should disappear in the reply window. Now select Show Toolbar. Did all the icons, including the send mail icon reappear?
