When I try to send a email from my iCloud account on my iPad it just sits in the outbox and doesn’t do anything, after a while I get the attached error message. If I follow the instructions there isn’t really anything to do or add as far as I can see. If I save as a draft and then pick it up on my iPhone, sending from the same iCloud account, it works fine. Any ideas as to how I can sort this out? I’ve tried signing out and back into iCloud on my iPad, but that didn’t change anything.
i only remember this starting to be an issue once I updated to ios14. I don’t know if it’s linked but sending email from iCloud aliases also doesn’t work, instead it reports the main iCloud email instead.

iPad Pro 11 2018 and iPhone 11 - both on most recent versions of iOS.

thanks

By any chance did you configure the SMTP server manually? I would simply use the default iCloud SMTP server by going to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > (scroll to the bottom) Mail > SMTP. It should look like this:

Tap on SMTP:

If these screens don't look like this, would you post screenshots so we can help you troubleshoot?

thank you. my mail smtp settings page looks identical to the picture you have posted. I haven’t set it up with manual settings, there are no other mail servers set up either. My iPhone settings are the same too.

The other issue about which address mail is sending from, even if you pick a specific address and even if your Sending From address list is correct (found in the same settings as above) is a known issue. Here's an Apple Discussion thread about some of it:

Thanks, that’s good to know. I’ll take a look in there.

Update to say that it’s been identified as an issue by the VPN that I sometimes run - the developers are aware that there is an issue and are working on it by all account.
