Are you a subscriber to Yahoo mail Plus? The premium (i.e. plus) account is required to access your yahoo email with a third party client (such as Apple mail).

Did you try looking around yahoo mail's help/support area for client based mail setup? You probably need to change the smtp port/SSL setup.

What Eric posted, in order to use an e-mail client to handle mail, you need a Yahoo! premium account like Hotmail, if you don't have one, it won't work.

Troubleshoot Mail Set-up

When I first set up my mail I had no problems. Then one day my computer locked up and would not work. I reinstalled Mac OS X and now I cannot get my mail accounts to set up. I didn't have yahoo mail plus before and my yahoo worked fine. I have my yahoo mail on my iphone no problem. Somewhere I get a message that yahoo is working on a fix and I can load it in a few days. This is so confusing!
