I am having a problem texting. When I try texting someone with 1 (516) xxx-xxxx, I get an error message that I need a valid 10 digit number or a valid short code. When I try texting using (516) xxx-xxxx I get the same message. I also tried using xxx-xxxx too and I get the same message. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

For some strange reason when I text my wife who has a different area code than I do, the text goes through. I am in the 516 area code and my wife's cell phone is in the 646 area code. My wife's number is listed as 1 (646) xxx-xxxx and the text goes through.

Any ideas? Please help.

Step 1. Try rebooting. (hold power and home until it reboots I think)

Step 2. Try restoring.

Step 3. Try contacting your provider and seeing if it's something with your account, or having them swap the sim.

Step 4. Call/go to Apple if it's under warranty.

Steps 1 and 2 should be tried first for almost any odd problem that could be in software, before you even ask about it online. Given that this sounds like a message coming from your carrier, I'm going to guess that step 3 will fix it, but you can and should try steps 1 and 2, if only because you can do them quickly and by yourself without calling / visiting any business.

Rebooting the system worked and I am now able to text without a problem. Thank you for the help.
