Crystal, u seem like the guy to ask. I have the same problem as this and have followed the steps but i was on official 5.0.1 with no signal and have used the official 4.1 to downgrade, i didn't get the 1015 error code and i've tried to jailbreak and deactivate with redsn0w but its not deactivating, i'm just getting the plug into itunes screen, any ideas??

Are you getting the plug into Itunes screen with slide to unlock at the bottom?

With that screen that mean you already successfully deactivated your phone. You will need original sim to put into the phone, hook it up to Itunes to activate the phone. Original sim does not need to be active, you can use any original inactive sim.

i think my iphone might be screwed then cos on itunes im getting 'There is no SIM card installed in the iphone you are attempting to activate', i'm using the sim card from my old phone contract that finished in november

Base on your post, it's seen like your phone did not detect the sim you put in your phone which Itunes confirmed with that message.

Try to wiggle the sim tray with sim card in it in and out to see if it detect the sim.

On the logic board, in the area at the bottom at the sim tray, there is a small metal clip that when sim tray put into the phone, it hits the clip and open up the circuit. If your sim tray does not touch that clip, then even with your sim inside, the phone will indicate that there is sim card inside.

So, my suggestion is to use tape or something to extend your sim tray just a tiny bit to see if it can put that clip out and see if it fixes the problem.

i don't think its a hardware problem because the phone was working fine until i tried to downgrade, jailbreak and used a ipad baseband, since then its been knackered. i've tried that solution with no luck

If you have a sim card inside your phone and it does not detect it, it is a hardware issue. If the sim isn't supported by the phone, then you receive a different message through Itunes.
