I am having a recent issue occurring with my 2019 iMac (Running Big Sur off internal SSD boot drive) over the past couple of days. Last week, when I went to my computer, it was displaying a flashing grey folder with a question mark. I rested the computer - got a kernel panic message and then it booted normally.

It happened again today - Following the most recent incident, I reset the NVRAM and ran first aid on the desk in recovery mode (per apple website instructions). Should I also reinstall MacOS as well?

Any recommendations on what I should do next if it reoccurs? What could be causing the problem?

Here is the kernel panic error:

Sounds like the internal hard drive is failing.

Can you do a diagnostic to confirm ?

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu
    2f77cc85238452e25cb517130188bf99.png
    > Restart, then press and hold the D key while your Mac restarts. Keep holding the D key until the screen listing different languages appears.
  2. Select a language. Apple Diagnostics starts automatically.
When Apple Diagnostics is finished, it lists any problems it finds. (The reference code is for use by Apple Support.)

Just ran Apple Diagnostics. - No issues found.

Can you get to Disk Utility after Cmd - R during boot up ?
I can, and ran Disk Utility... no issues found there as well. - Have not had a repeat of the issue so far since reseting the NVRAM (but still concerned, since it happened twice)

Good to hear.

I have a 2019 iMac as well but it is the base model with 1TB spinning HDD which I despise so I am using an external booting Bug Sur SSD (Thunderbolt) and it runs so much faster!

OP:

Is the iMac a 27"?
If so, have you added RAM?

What peripherals do you have attached?

It’s a 27” inch - I added an additional 32gb of ram on my own when I first bought the Mac in 2019.

Connect peripherals include:
- Apple SuperDrive (USB)
- external HD for time machine and xtra storage (USB-C)
- external speakers (optical)

I'm starting to wonder if something else is going on... I've also had a couple of unexpected restarts that have occurred while the Mac is asleep - It happened overnight. And this is the error I got. Any ideas?
