Bought a new 24" cinema display and an ATI RADEON HD 4870 to install into my early 2007 MacPro1,1.

Have installed the card with success but my new 24" cinema display won't display anything.

Hooked up an old 23" Cinema Display to the DVI input on the ATI RADEON HD 4870 card and works fine. Need help??? Some of my details below:

Really dumb question but here it goes: Is your 24" ACD connected to a power source? :p If it is, then try plugging both the 24" and the 23" at the same time. If you get picture on the 23" but not on the 24", go to system preferences, then displays and hit detect displays. This should recognize the monitor. If it doesn't try rebooting. If all this doesn't work you are either looking at a defective monitor or burnt MiniDisplay Port on the 4870. Hope your problem will get solved.

monitors

I have run a samsung 240t 24 in and now i am running a samsung 2745t plus and its great
Mac pro is new from aug 2009

Hi Cindori, yes its an 24" LED ACD connected via the mini display port.
Both monitors are plugged in and connected, when I hit detect displays nothing happens. :(

do as ildion mentioned, connect two displays and check system info on the good one

if you can't see your LED at all in there, your MD port might be broken

also try the screen in windows.

Thanks Cindori, Tried that, only displaying 23" ACD.

I'm getting a loan of a MacBook Pro to connect to the display to see if thats working.

At least that should eliminate one of the possibilities.

Will report back.

anyway you should try it in windows on the mac pro, cause if it works there, the problem is ATI drivers in osx. if it doesnt, it's problems with the 4870 port or the screen itself.

Just tested the screen on a MacBook, works perfect.

So must be something up with the Mini Display Port on the Graphics card, however the DVI input works so how come Mini Display Port doesn't?

Cindori, do you reckon it could be down to the Drivers?

I had a "weird" issue when I first put a second display in the MDP.
Black screen when I put a 20" acd via the MDP-DVI adapter.

I then realized that the cable didnt go all the way in to the cards MDP port.
After some blowing in the slot (maybe some package materiel?) the connector slid to the hilt,an vóila!

Obviusly you could have a different issue, but make sure your connector is properly seated with no metal visible.

last thing to check:

works on MacPro in windows?

if yes... driver issue in osx
if no... card issue

if driver issue, do a clean SL install up to 10.6.2
if card issue, return.

is the 4870 supposed to cost 450$?

no. it's just apple making more money.
like fooling people to buy new macs.

4870 works out of the box on the mac pro 1.1

Thanks for all the help guys, will try all your suggestions this evening and revert back.

Wish me luck :)

Since you have a 23" to test, you can also buy the miniDP to DVI adapter from the Apple Store. After testing it, just return the adapter. Of course that's assuming there is an Apple Store.
