I tried using pwnagetool 3.0 for a iPhone 3G through iTunes 8.2 on my Mac

However I don't think I entered DFU mode correctly. After turning off my iPhone and going through the steps to have it enter DFU mode, an iTunes message came up and said that an iPod has been detected but was able to recognize So I was unable to restore using the custom firmware.

I hope someone can help me out.

I find that happens when I'm not connected to the internet. Connect to the internet and it will recognize it and you should be able to restore.
