this problem just randomly appeared a couple of days ago and has persisted since then. When my headphones are plugged in and I get a call, the person on the other end cannot hear me. I'm using regular headphones without a mic. It I put the iPhone near my face and speak Into it and this has worked fine in the past. As soon as I take he headphones out I can talk on the phone as normal so the mic is not dead. Any ideas what the problem might be? incoming voice and all other sounds can be heard by me through the headphones

It's because you have your headphones plugged in. The iPhone comes with headphones with a mic on it so you can talk back to the other person. If the ones you're using have no mic then they're not going to be able to hear you.

I'm going to assume the external speaker and mic are turned off when headphones are plugged in.

i have the original iphone and both work for me. i'd just suggest that you make sure that the "hold" hasn't been toggled. other than that... it should work.

Your assumption is incorrect because I have been speaking into my iPhone with the headphones plugged in for the past two weeks. I've seen others do it as well. Try it with yours.

You assume incorrectly. I routinely talk through the phone's mic while listening on my headphones.
